This Fall 2026 issue feels so tender and intimate. Although the writing contains many common poetic images and topics (the moon, birds, fear, loss, love, and language itself all make appearances), …

I can't afford to live, and even if I could, most of the food is poisonous, and even if it wasn't, the world is burning as billionaires suckle the last pennies from its corpse, but tell me more about how a trans person playing field hockey is the greatest existential threat of our time.

Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one's own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence. Wendell Berry, What Are People For?

A succinct verdict on the persecution of the poor young academic who just died by suicide. Plagiarism is common. Persecution of the kind he endured is uncommon, aka selectively applied. The reason why he was targeted seems as clear as it is ugly.

“What nation has the most robust economy? // Death. // And on what is that economy built? // The end of pain. // What are Death’s most notable exports? // Incompletion, oil, / and the arts.” — @waynemillerpoet.bsky.social, “The News” @milkweededitions.bsky.social
THE NEWS. What nation has the most robust economy? Death. And on what is that economy built? The end of pain. What are Death’s most notable exports? Incompletion, oil, and the arts. What about imports? Death is the largest consumer of voices—and, of course, bodies. What are Death’s primary challenges? It has none. Its economy is an inexorable machine. What then should our strategy be? I’m afraid we have no choice but to expand our relationship with Death. And how do we do that? We should ask: What are the needs of its citizens? Given our resources, What can we do for them? Wayne Miller

Mary Ruefle on The Odyssey.
Deconstruction
I think the sirens in the Odyssey sang the Odyssey, for there is nothing more seductive, more terrible, than the story of our own life, the one we do not want to hear and will do anything to listen to.

Abdul El-Sayed on capitalism: “I’m capitalist who just knows about capitalism. I have a bad habit of reading, I’m so sorry.”
We’ve spoken about capitalism versus socialism.

Do you want to talk about capitalism? Let’s talk about capitalism. Are you recording? Capitalism is about leveraging the laws of supply and demand to efficiently allocate capital expenditure to maximize value. When capitalism works, it’s because you have free entry and exit into markets. So if you believe in capitalism, you have to believe in government regulation to protect markets. In fact, right now, we have exactly the opposite. You don’t have to be a socialist to believe that you should be taxing billionaires their wealth. In fact, if you are a capitalist, you should believe in that. So, I’m capitalist who just knows about capitalism. I have a bad habit of reading, I’m so sorry.

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

The Guardian

The sun setting. The lawns on fire.
The lost day, the lost light.
Why do I love what fades?

You who left, who were leaving,
what dark rooms do you inhabit?
Guardian of my death,

preserve my absence. I am alive.

Gospel

your scent settled in my mouth
like a prayer. i don’t know
why i said later when i meant
this song, these strobe lights,
your taste knotting my throat.
i guess i didn’t yet believe
in yes or a life without skirting
around my sutures. eyes open,
i wanted to meet you inside
that red-blooded moment. to hurt.
