this is a bit of an obsession of mine especially here in charlottesville. the cost of commercial real estate is prohibitive if you want to experiment and the city seems categorically opposed to small lots and small units that could allow people to start businesses without a huge capital investment

Here's the news report, though my most accusatory statements (accusing MoDOT of negligence) only made the intro for the broadcast. MoDOT had told me last week that this signal was fixed but in the half hour I was there with the reporter, the signal never triggered www.firstalert4.com/2026/07/27/l...

This is a confronting but important discussion of how being hit by a car so often leads to life-altering injuries, and life-altering outcomes for victims’ loved ones. All politicians who de-prioritise the safety of pedestrians and cyclists for the sake of cars and speed should be made to listen.

Pedestrian safety or efficient traffic flow? Curb bump-outs, lane removal under spotlight

Traffic chaos unfolded near the Dome this past weekend, with some people trying to see Zach Bryan stuck in traffic for hours.ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Traffic chaos unfolded near the Dome this past weekend, with some people trying to see Zach Bryan stuck in traffic for hours.
"We've seen shows here before, and I've never sat in traffic like I have tonight," said Alehsyn, who attended the concert at the Dome Saturday.
One reason for the backups, curb bump-outs, put there to allow for safer pedestrian crossings, plus the elimination of a lane on Broadway.
These bump-outs are appearing more and more downtown and are planned to be installed on Tucker, with work starting this week."These are the main lanes that get people from point A to B, these are the lanes connected to highways," said Aldridge.
Supporters of condensing the streets argue that St.
Louis was built for a much larger population and it makes sense to tighten the roads, but Aldridge doesn't agree with that logic.
"We're almost sending a message that we won't grow so let's make these streets smaller," said Aldridge.
He adds that while the idea is well intended, he wants further study on how they impact traffic.

I am of the mindset that we should be more hostile to local utility companies, especially since so many still aren’t following the utility coordination law passed by the city and requiring steel plates to be asphalted down on roads and sidewalks. (All photos from 2026)
A steel plate that doesn’t cover a hole in the road surface and isn’t tamped down. Exposed metal from the job sticks out of the hole. Spire is written on the plate. A cutout that has no steel plate. A metal object sticks up. A steel plate not asphalted down so the Spire crew just stuck cones around it rather than do what they were obligated to
