Clean air in schools reduces infections for the WHOLE POPULATION. Why WOULDN’T we clean the air? The healthcare/missed work costs far exceed the infrastructure costs, don’t let them get away with “it costs too much”. Demand clean air in schools and workplaces!

New study suggests that raising school ventilation levels to ASHRAE 241 targets could reduce flu cases by 33% for the WHOLE POPULATION! We need clean air in schools so bad!!! www.medrxiv.org/content/10.6...
Climate-Ready Buildings: Insights from U.S. Schools in a Global Context

Climate Week NYC • Sept 23
Projected Health Impacts of Cleaner Air in NYC Schools
Geetha Jeyapragasan and Charlie Whittaker I University of California, Berkeley
We modelled the projected impact of higher levels of ventilation and filtration in NYC schools. We did this by assessing the impact of achieving a field-recognized standard for healthy indoor air (ASHRAE Standard 241), developed by the American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, the professional association of ventilation engineers. Adopting it in schools would reduce the burden of seasonal respiratory illness and improve preparedness for future epidemics.
We developed an epidemiological modelling framework to estimate how improving building air quality affects airborne disease transmission in schools. Here, using seasonal influenza as a case study, we share results about the potential public health impact of raising ventilation such that all schools met ASHRAE 241 targets, approximately 9 equivalent air changes per hour (ACH).

Why This Matters for New York City
ALL FLU CASES
New York City operates the largest public school system in the United States, with approximately 880,000 students across 1,800 schools. A large portion of this infrastructure predates modern ventilation standards, with the average school building around 70 years old. An inspection of NYC schools i…

Notes from today’s “Healthy Air in NYC Schools” meeting. I learned that there’s a bill we can support RIGHT NOW (NYC Council Introduction 699) which would set air quality standards in schools and implement real-time reporting! intro.nyc/0699-2026+
Notes and drawings of speakers from the Leadership Action Hour on Healthy Air in NYC Schools.

“THE problem in SE schools is getting fresh air vs climate control” (Anisa Heming, Director, Center for Green Schools, US Green Building Council)

“Occupancy-based climate control is an important retrofit. Data needs to integrate into executive decision making.”
“If the property management is looking at the data, facilities staff will too.” (Thomas Yeh, Technical Advisor, NYSERDA)

“HVAC management needs to incorporate energy & IAQ goals” (i forget who the speaker was)

“Intro 699: City council bill for continuous AQ monitoring in schools and administrators to set standards”

“Reduce sickness: reclaim learning time, less burden on caregivers (illness + staying home to take care of sick child)”

“Air purifiers improve test scores THE SAME DAY”

“If you’re upgrading HVAC for energy reasons, put in environmental monitoring! If you’re monitoring, you WILL USE LESS ENERGY.” (Thomas Yeh)

“NYC is the country’s largest school district and 61% of schools have documented ventilation or air handling issues.” (I forget the speaker)

“Presenting information in ways that are easy and accessible helps bring on community partners for outside pressure.”
“How do we create consequences for councilmembers who don’t support? We need students and teachers with AQ monitors reporting on the bad quality!!”(Jenille Scott, Climate Director, ALIGN)

“Stakeholders care about health, human rights, pandemic preparedness, climate resilience, workplace safety, accessibility. It doesn’t matter the angle, as long as you can get their attention and get them moving.”
“Stories trump great stats!!”
(Dr. Bronwyn King)
