My goal is to capture the tapestry of the Napa experience through essays, short stories, poetry, and interviews. Wine notes and marketing pieces don’t tell the Napa story.

One of the things I’m most proud of this year is launching a lit mag by and for the people of Napa County on Substack. It’s not all wine and the living large. Life happens here, too.

I’m getting so annoyed at people’s cluelessness about the fact that interviewers are SUPPOSED TO press politicians on divisive issues—& say what their critics are saying!—in order to give them a chance to have their say! It’s not a chummy podcast or a pep rally, it’s an opportunity to reach doubters

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies. Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

B&N is reportedly squeezing a store into Napa this summer, and we’re worried. We’ve already got two great indie bookstores (hey, it’s a small town!), and we doubt the reading public will sustain a third. Who will lose, the corporation or the little guys?

Still thinking about Newsom. For a Democratic leader to consent to a framework that portrays trans people as a group that is trying to take something away from other people is flatly unforgivable. It is what the right does. And a Democrat who will do it to one group will do it to any group.

1000% this. Public libraries are actually pretty radical--free to all, and based on the idea that info should be available to all. Get a library card! Use your library! Those numbers often play into their funding.

Today’s poem, dipped from the library stacks, is by Ursula K. Le Guin in her book So Far So Good. I hope this influences my dreams … 🌙
The People
Some people have begun to come into my dreams from a long way away,
traveling over the mountain passes
that nobody living knows.
Old people who smell like fog
and the soft bark of redwoods.
They talk together softly.
They know more than I know.
I think they come from home.
