Recalling my time in early Ukraine when security services still ran the old playbooks. The dept head at my university (who always seemed to have $$ to travel overseas) would probe me about other staff, “Has Irena told you about her plans to go to Canada?” I’d act incredulous - “No! Wonderful idea!”

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Since the Cornell rape revelations, thread after thread of women are sharing stories of college rapes and near misses, assaults in bars, times in their teens when grown men touched/came on/used them, attempted rapes and scary, angry men after dates. Tiring, infuriating and way too familiar.

I love the comments in @nytimes.com Cooking. People post their adaptations; usually it’s “reduce cooking time” or “add another egg”. But also “Love this recipe but I eliminated sugar and replaced chocolate chips with ground beef then fried ingredients rather than baked”. Very funny.

The question is, what is possible with cheap energy? And alternatively, as Conservative governments want to lock into $$$$ nuclear, coal and generational infrastructure to keep them alive, what is lost?
At the turn of the millennium, solar panels cost $5-6 per watt. Today 12 cents, a level described as “offensively cheap”.
