I teach ethics and methods, and there's a question I've included in specific and target discussions that makes the students really squirm. Some even attempt to reject it at the level of the premise as functionally unquestionable. "How do we treat self-identification of neuro-atypicality?"

Do individuals reliably generate a honkhonk (or a twizzle, or a splakie) with the same parameters? Do groups of people generate something in the same range of parameters? Is this cross-cultural? Seems like a solvable problem!

Is this a serious question? I'm imagining some kind random polygon tool with N known parameters. Then, for x seeds, t polygons are drawn. For each set of t of x, the users selects the poly that is most 'honkhonk'. After initially seed-culling, the process is repeated with a genetic algo.

Oh, I've done it already. There's no shame, I did it as soon as I realized. I have just never heard a peer do this before. (Though have received a few reviews when I suspect the reviewer should have done so for me!)

Just did a thing for the first time. I accepted a review with the expectation of being able to review it. I sat down, pen-in-hand, so to speak. Turns out well beyond my expertise. I thought it was one thing, but it was another. Has anyone else had to pull out of a review for a similar reason?

My feed informed me Will stancil is still at it. Imagine a person who wishes to be taken seriously in serious ways was like "teaching is way easier than teacher make out" or "accountants are clowns, really". And yet "psychologist and philosophers are too closer minded to see the obvious" is fine.

The Wood Age: How Neanderthal Carpentry Smashed Prehistory’s Greatest Illusion
For two centuries, we called it the “Stone Age” because rocks don’t rot. A stunning trove of 60,000-year-old wooden tools from a Spanish cliff proves Neanderthals weren’t knuckle-dragging cave brutes—

Y'all, I saw Digger. It's fine. It's actually pretty great in a lot of ways, but somehow it's less than the sum of it's parts. But it's far from boring, and has some standout moments. I'm not hearing anywhere enough love for Ganesh. I nearly stood up and punched the air when he got his monologue.

There's drama about this finding. I'm sharing here because a lot of my non-academic follows here are posting stuff like "Yup, might as well huff microplastics, death to LLMs". I'd put the genie back in the bottle if I could, but the criticism must be justified. This study isn't all that.

I wish people would simply just accept this, rather than taking the claim at face value. It's so clear they don't believe it sincerely. And if they don't believe it, why are they doing it? IMO, everyone talking about this silliness means they're not talking about the other serious stuff.

A special case of a more general pet theory of mine. kieranhealy.org/blog/archive...
My pet Theory of Professional Academic Associations is that the discipline's organizational life inverts its core intellectual commitments. Thus, Political Science is the discipline of government and especially of democracy. Yet, the last time I checked, all of the high-level positions in APSA are decided by committee deals rather than free and fair elections by the membership. Or, Economics is the discipline of decentralized coordination through the efficient operation of the market. Yet its job "market" is in fact an administered queue, with departments explicitly ranking their candidates, departments effectively ranking themselves, and a direct matching process operating between the two as top-ranking candidates slot into open positions in top-ranked schools. (This mechanism also includes an effective method of rent-extraction from Deans in the form of a salary ratchet.) And, to get to the present case, Sociology is the discipline that analyzes the many forms of collective social action, on the one hand, and is the social science most oriented towards the exposure of the workings of power, on the other. So naturally it follows that the ASA is not very good at organizing anything, and that its financial arrangements are as secretive as legally possible.

This is bad and all that ... ...but I can't think of a less reliable dataset than undergraduate essays. To say nothing of the quality of the prose, nor the accuracy of the content... it's a compromised dataset. How much of it is *already* LLM? It's gotta be at least 5%, and probably much higher.

I mean, there are complex things at play. As much as find Social Identity (et al) to be pretty boring... it is real, and there are sensible things to say about transmission of identity from a CE point of view. I haven't read this paper yet, but it seems like a good, salient, valuable first step.

#OnThisDay in 1861, Charles Darwin wrote to his friend, "But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything." 📜🧪
Sepia photograph of Charles Darwin in old age, seated in a chair and shown from the waist up in three-quarter profile facing right, against a plain backdrop. He is bald on top with white hair at the sides, a lined forehead, and a long, full white beard. He wears a dark, heavy overcoat with wide lapels over a waistcoat, his hands resting in his lap at the lower right.A line of Charles Darwin's handwriting in brown ink on cream paper, with faint writing showing through from the other side of the page. It reads: "But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything."
