Primate Profile #93: Muna-Buton Macaque Macaques are predominantly vegetarian. Confined to the islands of Muna and Buton, which are rapidly losing natural forest, these macaques are turning to crop-foraging, with up to 1/4 of their food coming from farms. Image: N Gunadharma (iNat.org)
Adult male Muna-Buton macaque standing in the forest undergrowth. He is very muscular, making him look quite bulky. They are mostly black or dark grey, but with paler legs and rump. They have almost no tail (only about an inch long). Their faces are black and shaped like an egg timer, with quite eyes that are fairly close together.
