I still remember when Jeffrey Archer was incarcerated. The judge, Humphrey Potts, began by saying: “Sentencing you, Lord Archer, gives me no pleasure at all...” Comedy writer Andy Hamilton responded: “Why did they give that job to the one person in Britain who could make that remark?” Quite right!

The BBC last night paid tribute to the late composer George Fenton in their news programme, then played “Nature Boy” by George Benson. How hard is it to get these things right - it’s not as if they both shared the same surname? It’s the type of mistake you’d expect from AI!

How is it not news when the president nods off in public meetings and press conferences dozens of times? If you follow independent media, you see it and know about it. But why hasn’t CBS, NBC or ABC showed a montage of it on their evening news? They simply refuse to ever show it.

Disgusting. Trump says he feels bad for the seven Cornell students accused of rape, and his biggest worry is that they "won't get a fair shake" with Letitia James as special prosecutor.

Rachael Stirling’s book about her mother Dame Diana Rigg is candid about their relationship. It’s brilliant on the dynamic between these two forces of nature and very poignant at the end. Rachael asked her mum: “Do you remember when we weren’t getting on?” Diana simply responds. “No”. End of story!

I had to tell somebody to put a sock in it when they started talking up Reform the other day. But was I wrong: should I have challenged them on why they are basically racists? And is there even a suitable response? I just want to snub and ignore the whole lot of them!

If GB News were a normal commercial venture, like Talk TV, it would have been binned long ago. Since September 2020, it has spewed out hateful far-right propaganda, paying high salaries to people such as Nigel Farage. Ofcom has abjectly failed to address this threat to democracy.

No doubt, there is better drama. But if you can watch “Vera” and the end of the episode in the sixth series without welling up, you’re better than me. Brenda Blethyn isn’t just emoting, she’s enraged, guilty, ashamed, all at once. It’s not just “cosy crime”. This is genuinely tragic!

Is there anything Ciaran Hinds isn’t good in? I just watched the new adaptation of Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” and he’s outstanding - which can’t be said for all the cast. Florence Pugh tries her best, but, my God, it’s depressing. Of course it is. It’s f***ing John Steinbeck!

Bench in Wigtown, black painted iron work with "A writer only begins a book - a reader finishes it" , "Reading is a conversation - all books talk, but a good book listens as well", "A book is a gift you can open again and again" and "There is no friend as loysl ad a book", all written on in white paint.
