So I've got the Sunday (Tuesday?) scaries a bit early, so to cheer myself up I'm going to list what we've done this holiday. Lots of screen time and lazing. Lots of walks. Plenty of sailing, kayaking, windsurfing. Lots of swimming. Sometimes unintentionally (see above) Library visits aplenty

Climate is a pattern, and the pattern has changed. = Climate Change
Graphic reading, “The difference between ‘There used to be hot summers too.’ and climate crisis.” Below is a temperature-anomaly chart showing mostly blue, cooler-than-average years in the earlier record, shifting dramatically toward sustained red, warmer-than-average years in recent decades. Occasional earlier red bars are labelled “These were hot summers,” while the sustained cluster of increasingly warm recent years is labelled “This is climate change.”

You suddenly get a narrator describing your life and there’s no way to turn it off - everyone can hear it. While shopping, at work, at home, with friends - the voice narrating your every move goes on. Who do you hope is the voice of this narrator?

Holy shit, we're actually getting there. "UCLA researchers develop low-cost blood test to detect multiple cancers and other diseases from a single sample [—] In tests, MethylScan detected about 63% of cancers across all stages and roughly 55% of early-stage cancers." (from April) #ShareGoodNewsToo

It was 41C in my garden yesterday afternoon, in the shade, under a tree. Same spot today, right now is 35C. My classroom yesterday was 33C by lunchtime. Several students felt ill, as did I. One of my children's schools did not close today, and she has had to be picked up, and is ill and headachey.

The forecast is for 38C round here on Thursday. I don't want my kids in school in poorly ventilated, un-air conditioned, south facing classrooms in that sort of temperature. The rooms are unbearable at 25C. Zero learning can happen and it's just risking heat stroke. We need Aircon in schools.

It’s the time of year to be sharing this.
An infographic flow chart describing what to do if you find a baby bird. Some key points:
– if the baby bird is injured, remove it from danger and contact local wildlife rescue
– if it is featherless, you can find the nest, and the nest is undamaged, replace it in the nest and observe from a distance
– if it is featherless and you can’t find the nest or the nest is damaged, contact local wildlife rescue
– if it has lots of feathers, it’s normal for it to be on the ground, so look to see if the parents are around. If they are, and if they’re feeding the fledgling, then all good. If not, you can gently shoo the fledgling under cover and observe to see if the parents return.
– whether the baby bird is featherless or feathered, if the parents don’t return to feed it (or if a predator turns up and starts attacking it), contact local wildlife rescue

A fairly productive weekend: Made chocolate traybake, banana bread, sourdough wholemeal loaf, and 2 X veggie lasagnas. Went to the gym, ran 5k, swam 1k. Booked and organised various child related activities, helped eldest send more work experience begging emails, helped boy with homework. All good😁💪

Dr. Leila Denmark co-developed the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine. World's oldest practicing pediatrician until she retired at age 103 (after 73 yrs). At the time of her death at age 114 & 60 days, she was the 5th-oldest validated living person in the world & 3rd-oldest in the US. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white photo shows Dr. Leila Denmark (center), an elderly woman with glasses, seated and smiling while looking at a baby who is laughing and facing her. Another younger woman is also seated to the right, laughing and placing her hand near the baby's midsection. The scene suggests a warm, inter-generational interaction, possibly in a clinical or home setting. Dr. Denmark was a pioneering pediatrician, known as the world's oldest practicing pediatrician upon her retirement at age 103.

So today I started getting itchy sides. Then on my tummy. Then shoulders and back. By the time I got home I had huge welts and hives and was ready to tear my skin off! The only thing I can think that caused it is the cold and stress. I skipped the gym, took an antihistamine, and it's calming. Weird!

⚛️ A mole is useful for counting & measuring the number of subatomic particles in chemical reactions ⚛️ The unit "mole" was named after the Latin "moles" (meaning "mass") in 1894 by W.Ostwald who derived the term from "molecule” (also derived from the Latin "moles”) to represent a "mass" of molecules
