That are closer to the spirit of the thing. I still think the fundamental problem is knowing where all your set pieces are in space and time, but thinking of it as a real-time branching narrative/animation feels possibly a more promising avenue.

I think that was the wrong abstraction though. As it isn't really about sequencing the player characters movement so much as about the choreography of enemies, camera, player and props, etc and rhythm is just one way of creating legibility, there might be more natural ways of signaling actions.

I mean John wick is basically a Kung-Fu movie just with guns as props that go bang. I've been thinking about the idea for a while. The first iteration that I tried, was something a bit more like an on-rails runner-rhythm game. I built a tool that allowed you to plot trajectories with beat markers

In the last few years have been quite sporadically on and off contracts. Though would say a lot of it has been more because recovering from surgery and disability caused by autistic burnout.

On the other hand, game engines use state machines for creating networks of animations but they really are more focused on character animation and wouldn't really work for this use case either.

The main barrier to do something like that in my mind is really that it is quite a big tooling problem. You need a way to essentially create a graph based non-linear animation editor. Most animation software is oriented around assembling nested clips into a linear, singular timeline.

This assumes that games are mostly content driven though. The problem with early access is that it prevents iterating on the base formula of the game much. People have already paid money for it and get (reasonably) angry if things change too much

I really really want to make an action sort of modern take on the fmv: using 3d animation blending as well as stuff like inverse kinematics to allow players to switch branch as they approach them with a reasonable margin for error. Imagine John Wick level choreo in a game #gamedev

There is also a weird thing with wanting more games to feature diverse viewpoints, then acknowledging indies are doing that, so basically what you want is a big budget game to do what indies are doing... And you gotta give this up.
