![A picture of a page of a book. The page reads:
[“I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” he admits, more to himself than Ash.
He doesn’t understand why he’s sitting in a pool of his own blood again. He knows how important it is to allow injuries to heal fully—correctly—to pay attention to them all he can, especially one on something so essential as his leg. Why has he been so ambivalent toward this one? Why has he let things get to this point?
“Is it because I’m dying?” His question is barely a whisper, a realization he doesn’t mean to voice.
Crouching down in front of him so that their knees touch, hands hovering in the air between them as if unsure where to put them, Ash stiffens. Rafa raises his face from the ground, staring into the emptiness that is Ash’s dark, wide eyes under the night sky. “Did you know that, shadow? Ash?” He asks. “Did Raza tell you?” About the vision cursing me mere hours after she and I were born? The one that took our mother’s life at the same time as it stole my future? Not that his father had ever cared about the latter. The queen was dead, and as far as the king was concerned, it was Rafa’s fault.
Slowly, Ash shakes his head.
See? He doesn’t care either.]](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:tvudj5eyz25fso4tvarln4ak/bafkreieg6fbbyt5fu35g6oqlkhpij3tgppdjh6gwb3adij4vyp4czcyqda)
