This graphic shows just how competitive Zack Polanski and the Green Party were in the north of the electorate. (Holborn and St Pancras by-election).

I am angry tonight. Because tonight ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car. ICE makes this city less safe. We want them out. Now.

As expected, the Green Party's Zack Polanski did not succeed in winning the Holborn and St Pancras by-election. But his showing was so strong, taking nearly one-third of the vote, that Labour will be foolish indeed if they think they have seen off the Green electoral challenge.

Opportunities 4.8% is actually up from 4.5% in Curia's last poll.

Chris Hipkins may actually have had a point about the 25.9% in September's Curia poll being a 'rogue poll'. No other recent polls (including the new Curia) have had Labour below 28%. (Roy Morgan need to poll more people to produce more accurate polling).

I used to have a copy of the National Party's 1966 election manifesto. The first sentence of the first paragraph talked about the Party as NZ's chief political bulwark in defence of individual rights. I guess 60 years is a very, very long time.

National is now floundering in policy terms, rushing out unworkable nonsense in a desperate effort to woo the hard right voters who have abandoned them. The fact that it results in the loss of centrist voters doesn't seem to have occured to them.

How fascinating that Mr Peters wants the votes of conspiracists, but doesn't trust any of them enough to be in his caucus. It's almost as though he's a political charlatan.....

I won't pretend that I watched the "leaders" debate. But it's hilarious watching almost the entire class of political "commentators" desperately trying to avoid mentioning that Mr Hipkins won it, by a large margin.

The Shining axe used by Jack Nicholson for sale as part Stanley Kubrick auction
Excluive: Weapon is one of hundreds of items to be sold as part of the influential late director’s personal archive The axe wielded by Jack Nicholson as he delivered his chillingly manic line “Here’s Johnny!” in the 1980 horror movie The Shining is to go on sale. Nicholson’s character, Jack Torrance, uses the axe to hack out an opening in a locked door protecting his terrified wife Wendy, played by Shelley Duvall. It is also the murder weapon in the killing of Scatman Crothers’ character, Dick Hallorann. One of cinema’s most famous axes could be yours for a list price of between £30,000 and £50,000. I can't even pretend to be interested in the "leaders" debate. If it's a leaders debate, all the leaders should be there. More than 40% don't intend to vote for either of the "leaders" on display.

Quebec's right wing Govt didn't just lose power in today's election. They won no seats at all. At the last election, they won 90 of the 125 seats.

From the self-interested standpoint of a bourgeois Govt, cutting foreign aid is a very short-sighted thing to do. Aid is one of the key ways in which nations exercise so-called 'soft power'. In that sense, it offers very good "value for money".

Simeon Brown has said this morning that National's job is to convince New Zealanders about their plan for the country. In that case, why is the Opposition the focus of most of their ads? And given how badly the attack ads are faring, are they deft enough to change course?

A *huge* note of caution on those Curia polls in Maori electorates. They are polling only among Maori roll voters who live in areas that are 25%+ Maori. That is not necessarily producing an accurate result.

I'm sure it's been said before, but the "rort MMP" campaign by the hard right could backfire spectacularly. A National Govt without its competent Ministers facing much larger NZF and ACT caucuses is a recipe for utter chaos, in economic as well as political terms.

On the other hand, the credibility of the Govt in fiscal terms is very low indeed at this point, so maybe that matters less than I think. But I also I think there are political reasons to cost Pay Equity. Be honest about the cost and why that cost needs to be paid.

I think Labour should at least attempt to quantify the likely fiscal cost of Pay Equity. I understand that is not an easy task, due to there being so many variables, but not costing a policy is a gift to the Govt in propaganda terms.

If you think 28% each for the two 'major' parties is pretty dire, consider that in many countries the traditional major Parties would love to be on 28%. France, Germany, UK, Australia etc. That's how deep the economic and political crisis has become.

One thing I noticed when busing through Strowan was that if there was a billboard on the houses of the very richest people, there was a National sign and an ACT sign too. Suggesting 'strategic' voting. But, outside of the very richest people, nearly all places with Nat signs had Nat signs only.
