A work by Arcimboldo, who, being a complete and wonderful weirdo with the patronage of Holy Roman Emperors, spent his time painting absolutely nutso “portrait busts” of abstract concepts including seasons, archetypes, and elements. This one is Autumn made up of autumnal fruits, foliage, and, of course, gourds.

82 years ago today my grandfather, who lied about his age to enlist in the military, was in one of the first waves of landing crafts to hit the beaches of Normandy. He's been gone a long time now, but today I remember him and the other brave souls who fought and died for a righteous cause.
