All of this is to say that the evidence is strong the enforced disappearance is an intentional strategy to facilitate otherwise unlawful deportations. We should be horrified that people are disappearing from accountability mechanisms like the detainee locator.

A co-author and I have been arguing that the US uses enforced disappearance systematically to facilitate unlawful deportations for a few years now. You can read our piece, that includes a typology of immigrant disappearance in the US here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

When your family, community, and lawyers don’t know where you are, it’s hard to stop the gov from forcing through an unlawful deportation, even if the method for doing so violates US law and policy. Knowing where you are and being able to communicate with you mitigates a lot of potential harm.

In the case of immigrants in the US, the greater co-morbidity of concern is less torture and killing (though people are right to be concerned that these things could happen during an enforced disappearance), but rather unlawful deportation, violations of refugee rights, and due process violations.

Feral Human Rights Lawyer @natcad.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
The definition of enforced disappearance, though, does not include a temporal element and does not require the person be tortured or presumed dead. Those are ADDITIONAL violations that can and often do co-occur with an enforced disappearance.

Feral Human Rights Lawyer @natcad.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
The result is that people are placed outside the protection of the law. Some of the more infamous examples occurred during the Pinochet regime and Operation Condor, in which people were ALSO systematically tortured and extrajudicially killed.

We are a broken nation. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians were living and working legally, paying taxes, and contributing. Haiti remains wholly unsafe. But Trump hates Haitians, and the White House wanted videos of Black people in chains, so they stripped them of status and turned on the cameras.

I feel bad for the players who did not ask to get thrown into this political situation. USMNT’s leadership had a choice to make: accept the spoils of a corrupt deal made by a despot, or choose not to play the player who had a red card, despite FIFA’s corrupt decision. They chose wrong.
