When i talked about 5K road race data the other day, I only broke it down by gender. But age is a factor as well. Here's a look at that same 5K data, organized by age group. You can see that as runners age, they slow down.
Violin plot in rainbow colors showing 5K finishes by age group, starting with 20-24 on the left and in five-year increments up to 80+. The under-20 runners are on the far right. Each age group over 40 appears to overall be slightly slower than the next younger age group and the distribution moves from a tadpole shape with a long tail to more of a even distribution and short tail as runners age.

When I shared this same thread on Threads, I got a response that highlights why this data is important to share. Some faster runners have never struggled with this sport or stuck around long enough after a race to see BOTP runners finish, so assume we aren’t real. It limits our sport’s potential.
Threads post screenshot with the name blacked out. Post reads: “That’s a lot of fucking posts for “I want to call what I do running, but I don’t want to run”.

Complaining about a 9:39 paced 5k is wild.

Buy some hiking boots.”

When I explain my capstone, I start here: Couch to 5K, probably the best-known beginning runner program actually trains you to run for 30 min, which requires a 9:39/mile pace to complete 5K. The median 5K finishing time NYRR 5Ks from 2022 to 2025 was 9:30. The average was 10:05. 🧵
Bar chart on a light blue background. The taller blue bar, value 66357, is labeled Sub-30 and shows how many NYRR 5K finishes took less than 30 minutes. The slightly shorter orange bar, value 57869, is labeled 30+ and shows how many finishes took 30 minutes or longer.
