Our top choices of places to see on Doors Open Days
This weekend is Doors Open Days in Edinburgh coordinated by The Cockburn Association, the conservation charity. This is your opportunity to see behind doors which are in many instances usually closed to members of the public. There is a full list of all buildings which are open this weekend here. We have some highlights for you to consider when planning your days out this weekend. The University of Edinburgh owns many of the historical buildings in the capital, and some deserve a visit. From their inventory our choice is: The Confucius Institute, Abden House…

The neighbourhood bruiser cat just came in through the (open) catflap and our little cat bravely defended her territory but lordy that was a lot of ruckus for this time of the morning.

I'm trying to get some early morning runs in, had to stop to appreciate this.
A sunrise over some distant buildings, with the sea in the midground, rocky outcrops to the left and a grassy cliff to the right. The sky is blue with some wisoy cloud.

Equinox! Can't remember if #daylightbot pops up today but if it doesn't, happy flipover day! The rate at which daylight gets less is now decreasing; there's still less of it, just more slowly, iyswim.

I do not understand how this has gone so wonky. NTS: next time I think I can do modulo 3 (ie, needles) maths on 2^7 stitches don't, just find another blessed needle. This isn't the only bit that's a mess, but I'm the only person wearing it, so *pfft*. It'll look better inside out.

I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

incomingalbatross on tumblr: "There's a post somewhere out there about Smaug being a one-hobbit problem and the War of the Ring being a four-hobbit problem, and it is a very good and funny post but I would like to refine it further. No single event in the War of the Ring was so cataclysmic as to require four hobbits. It's just that they had several hobbit-level problems simultaneously, and even the best hobbit can't be everywhere at once.

So, the scale as I understand it:

* Smaug: one-hobbit problem
* The Witch-King: one-hobbit problem
* Denethor: one-hobbit problem
* Saruman: honestly could have been a one-hobbit problem but having two hobbits on it made them both less stressed
* The Ring: two-hobbit problem

(Although then of course there's the Scouring of the Shire, which, judging by hobbit involvement, is a whole new category of Problem.)"

sweetcardamom: "From @melliabee 's tags:

#Elrond: I'm sending you with four hobbits. use them wisely. #Gandalf (who only initially planned for one): this is gonna be bigger than I thought"

scleroticstatue: "I would like to point out that the Witch-King was actually a two-hobbit problem, because the Witch-King almost killed Merry and Pippin had to search for him to fix him up."

luminous-warrior: "I would also like to note that the One Ring actually turned out to be a three hobbit problem, considering the involvement of Gollum."

scleroticstatue: "Correct! Which means we have a spectrum!

* Regular kings of any size: 1 hobbit
* Supernatural kings of any size: 2 hobbits
* The devil himself: 3 hobbits"
