This is such an important thread… countering misinformation in the online space. Another reason why the predominant theory of knowledge transmission that has obsessed the education sector for the past 10 years has done a huge disservice to our children…. bsky.app/profile/elio...

This is a lovely thread for #TeamEnglish I love seeing annotations and training pupils how to make their own is so important. I really enjoy teaching exam classes and seeing the systems and detail pupils come up with. My own texts were quite sparse as a student.

@bobeaglestone.bsky.social is absolutely right and, contrary to the headline, he’s not against 19thC novels, he just thinks there needs to be more choice of excellent books for our students . The length issue will still arise though- I think certain books should be taken off the spec every 5 years

Sad that for #WorldBookDay2026 the only £1 books for my son’s age are netflix tv series based rather than books by a wonderful picture book author, equivalent to the MG ones. Bear Rescue, Skandar and Against All Odds are great but he’s never going to read them if his books are cheap nonsense

Emagazine is such a good investment. The archive of articles is so useful for thinking about critical perspectives. Give pairs or small groups different articles to look at, summarise or argue with. There will be tonnes on any text your studying. #TeamEnglish

This is true and I think fair play for reflecting on this but now it would be good to see people who argued vociferously against ’prog’ baddies to *ask them* what could be done, to find a balance and to think about what assessment could look like.

This is why the curriculum writers chose are a problem- I agree we need more diversity but it’s about their attitude towards English education too. The link between learning to perform and about performance, language and expression or thought has been eroded over 10 years.

I remember tweeting years ago, when the term was suddenly all the rage, that no school could possibly lay claim to "knowledge-richness" if it ignored (or even sneered at) media education. The Govian, selective evisceration of the English curriculum didn't help.

6/8 All of this happens when we share books and talk about them with children. We need children to have opportunities to misunderstand, and then to discuss this with them. We need to provide texts that are curious, fascinating, unusual. We need to ensure they know how texts and words work.

These habits are what the Hackney reading programme/ reciprocal reading was based on (also small group) its the strategy I have found works enormously well. It’s fallen out of fashion which is a shame- small groups of readers trained in good teading skills vs a ‘knowledge’ approach….

They definitely do 'push' schools but it's worth remembering that some schools refuse to play the game. If nobody played it, the game wouldn't work. The profession needs to reflect on that imo along with 'outstanding' Ofsted banners while complaining about Ofsted.
