Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 09/03/2026An infamous headteacher once said in an interview that she had explicitly taught her child all their complex vocab deliberately. she argued it didn’t happen by accident but by deliberate instruction and repetition. Total nonsense 020
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 09/03/2026@bobeaglestone.bsky.social is absolutely right and, contrary to the headline, he’s not against 19thC novels, he just thinks there needs to be more choice of excellent books for our students . Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 25/02/2026No problem at all, I loved Emag when I taught a level and a precocious gcse class would enjoy some of the more general articles on say the gothic. Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 25/02/2026This is not a separate issue to SEND and curriculum reforms. This is the issue. How we view those around us and believe they should be treated and spoken about should be core to your pedagogy and curriculum 000

Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 25/02/2026The evidence bases they chose to draw from were heavily cherry picked. I’ve seen a lot of oracy stuff saying ‘oh no turn and talk and rehearsal are dialogic, how can you say they aren’t, we actually have always known this’ and it’s clear they havent engaged with dialogic teaching at all really 120
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 25/02/2026I think it’s worth looking at why it was convenient and to whom. The attitudes towards children, young people, working class and minority people knowledge and practice can’t be ignored. 010
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 25/02/2026Exactly this, and you’ve been saying that for ages- the exams are wrong. We know that in English there’s been a mismatch between disciplinary practice and schools for quite a while, the curriculum review was fairly disappointing though, I felt. Some positive words but no real change 121
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 25/02/2026I’ve seen a few of this type of blog recently, going to list some blogs by people consistently arguing for high quality progressive pedagogies for years. 120
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 25/02/2026I don’t now want to see lots of blogs by people who have suddenly discovered that using children’s lit at ks3 is good or strctured group talk works well etc. go back to the people who’ve been experts on that for decades. 151
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 24/02/2026This is true and I think fair play for reflecting on this but now it would be good to see people who argued vociferously against ’prog’ baddies to *ask them* what could be done, to find a balance and to think about what assessment could look like. 142
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 19/02/2026I think it’s similar in English- disciplinary practices are a kind of knowledge- what we do with the stuff we read and how we do it- is very different if you look at a lot of gcse vs HE or professional English, media and drama roles. 000
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 19/02/2026Definitely- think the issue is that what a lot of KR has become is quite a stripped back understanding of fairly complex things. In a bid to ensure we don’t overload working memory etc we aren’t really giving children a full picture a lot of the time. So yes, more knowledge, more space for questions 100
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 19/02/2026This is why the curriculum writers chose are a problem- I agree we need more diversity but it’s about their attitude towards English education too. The link between learning to perform and about performance, language and expression or thought has been eroded over 10 years. 020
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 19/02/2026Whe I did GCSEs my media coursework was on the party political broadcasts of the BNP and the word ‘chav’ I learned loads about racism and class and it was closely aligned with A View FRom the Bridge- our modern text and Seamus Heaney’s poetry 032
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 19/02/2026Yeah I think the idea that any subject is need to know is flawed. I think media has also become totally separate from English because of ebacc and gcse reforms. This means it’s not about ‘reading’ or media texts in the same way as it used to be. 120
Reposted by Dr Myfanwy EdwardsJames Durran @jdurran.bsky.social · 19/02/2026I remember tweeting years ago, when the term was suddenly all the rage, that no school could possibly lay claim to "knowledge-richness" if it ignored (or even sneered at) media education. The Govian, selective evisceration of the English curriculum didn't help. 173
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 19/02/2026I agree that knowledge is important BUT I also think we need to ensure we’re teaching them to discern and to question texts, to recognise propaganda etc. Followed you for a while and I think we broadly agree but not every advocate of KR curriculum wants to raise critically thinking children 100
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 19/02/2026I liked it- it’s not as dark as blackadder but it’s really well written and basically does the experiment you’re doing but sets in in Shakespeare’s Elizabethan era rather than blackadders 020
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 19/02/2026i Mean Ben Elton kind of showed us with Upstart crow- I thought that worked but I’d like Robert Webb in there in Hugh Laurie’s role 100
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 14/02/2026Well indeed. It’s no surprise when there’s such pushback against classroom talk, work in groups or children’s own knowledge/ creating of meaning. High control environments require high control over meaning too. 041
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 13/02/2026Assumed you would be but I feel like RR used to be quite big and now indont hear much about it. It gave us huge improvements when we didn’t as an intervention whej I was HOD. 110
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 13/02/2026But also a lot of people think it’s about pre teaching vocab and telling children meaning not asking them to create meaning, so they findnit Hard to do independently 120
Reposted by Dr Myfanwy EdwardsDamsonEd @damsoned.bsky.social · 12/02/20266/8 All of this happens when we share books and talk about them with children. We need children to have opportunities to misunderstand, and then to discuss this with them. We need to provide texts that are curious, fascinating, unusual. We need to ensure they know how texts and words work. 1111
Dr Myfanwy Edwards @myf1990.bsky.social · 13/02/2026These habits are what the Hackney reading programme/ reciprocal reading was based on (also small group) its the strategy I have found works enormously well.
