Thrilled that this is out in press! Thanks to the whole lab team involved. One step towards uncovering HOW myelin forming cells control the growth of their sheaths in the CNS. Particularly, here, how oligodendrocytes can control myelin sheath elongation without molecular cues from neurons.

I missed this beautiful work showing that myelin compaction depends on actin disassembly. It has SMLM, correlative AFM with a clever fluorescent nanoscale reporter of compaction, in vivo cell-specific actin disassembly using deActs… check it out! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

An aged industrial building features a wicket gate—a small door within a larger door—with a white sign reading "DANGEROUS BUILDING KEEP OUT" set in Helvetica without punctuation. Painted above the doors is "NEWARK WORKS" but in this photograph, NEWARK and the S have been cropped out. The riverside frontage of the 19th century Stothert & Pitt engineering works. Excited to share my postdoc paper from the @lyons-lab.bsky.social Our question: what controls axon diameter? It varies >100-fold between neurons, shapes signal speed & myelination, and changes in disease. Yet very little is known about what regulates it. 🧵 journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

A high-resolution phenotypic screen identifies regulators of CNS axon diameter in zebrafish
Axon diameter is important for action potential conduction speed, but what molecular pathways influence this neuronal property? This study reports a high-resolution imaging-based chemical screening pi...

During the symposium @amsterdamleuko.bsky.social, I learned that lifespan and quality of life have improved because caregivers now know better how to support #leukodystrophy patients. If that’s not a cause worth spending a scientific career on, I don’t know what is. Congratulations, Marjo!

Leukodystrophies are rare, severe brain disorders. It’s remarkable how much the field has progressed, from identifying disease genes and understanding some of the disease mechanisms to therapy, quite a bit of that owing to Marjos work @amsterdamleuko.bsky.social

Yesterday in Amsterdam, Marjo van der Knaap gave her retirement lecture at @vuamsterdam.bsky.social. An international group of scientists working on #leukodystrophies paid respect to her achievements, including by wearing the traditional gown. There was also a good party @amsterdamleuko.bsky.social

Leaving Edinburgh and the peripheral nerve society meeting with lots of impressions of how much the science in this field has advanced in the last few years, and how basic science ultimately results in therapy approaches for neuropathies. Takes years but is very much worth it.
