playing competitive sports as I get older is such a blessing. being a sweaty dork tweaking my hip as I chase a basketball out of bounds is a blessing too. injuries come and go but damn I’ll do this till the wheels (joints, ligaments, appendages) fall off.

honestly, i think the lynx were doomed since phee's return - specifically THIS version of phee. pre-phee: miles + howard were LOCKED IN and the machine whirred surprisingly + wondrously. yes they hit the wall of healthy, TALL liberty. but really, their trust-in-phee pivot wasn't it. #wnba

shutting down frat houses won't end rape culture, but it will disorganize a lot of rapists, and i think that's probably worth doing if only to destabilize what is apparently an ecology of organizations that functionally exist to rape women per the whole "purpose of a system is what it does" insight.

i know we're just trying to survive the series but i think benching miles at these inflection points is counterproductive. keep her out there and find the level she can be super effective at! it's going to worsen the hesitation problem keeping miles on the bench! #wnba

This is pretty good but unfortunately Critchley has the facts exactly backwards; LLMs are not infinite archives that don't forget. The training is precisely a forgetting that's why the companies are worth a lot more than the Internet archives. plus they have "weight"; like that is their whole thing

No team is greater than hers! She is The Point God over all queer nations and fantasy leagues! She is sovereign, supreme, and sufficient to reign! -Becky Hammon’s Crucifix’s ESPN #WNBA Fantasy League opponents on the joyous occasion of her inevitable victory, quoted in Isaiah 40:17
A screenshot of the ESPN fantasy icon for winning your fantasy basketball league. It is an orange circle with a cartoony depiction of a trophy whose top is a basketball and whose base says 1st in white letters. Underneath the trophy icon, against a white background, it reads “Champion” and “Becky Hammon’s Crucifix.” On the right side of the orange sphere + trophy, at the 3 o’clock position, is a circular headshot of Aces coach Becky Hammon wearing a red hoodie blazer and her big crucifix.

ANOTHER death in ICE detention which appears likely to be the result of medical neglect. A diabetic who told his family members he wasn't receiving regular insulin shots OR getting diabetic-appropriate meals just died in custody. The U.S. prison-ICE detention-industrial complex kills.

Have some BIG NEWS, and it really is wild that today is also the anniversary of the Fanbyte Apocalypse. But my time at Game Developer is done, and hence, my time as a full-time game journalist has come to an end. 20 years in a career sure is something. www.tumblr.com/danielling/8...
After 20+ years of writing professionally about games, including time at Polygon and Idle Thumbs, launching Waypoint, serving as editor in chief of Fanbyte and finally as EIC at Game Developer, my time is done. I'm officially out at Game Developer. Given the state of game journalism, this obviously means leaving the profession, at least as a full-timer.

I'm out, with respect to my colleagues, and a lot of love for the site as it was. We've published work that I'm extremely proud of, particularly our reporting on labor and on how workers are finding things in a miserable, gutting moment in the game industry. I'm proud of the dev-authored features we had for so many years, the resources and knowledge and bits and pieces of know-how that I still use, to this day, in my own game design courses.

What's next? Well, I'm not leaving games. I'll always be making and teaching and writing about games, it just can't be my full time gig anymore. I've actually been doing narrative design on a game since 2022, with a team I really believe in, and I can't wait until I can show that off properly. I am also OPEN TO WORK. Anything involving writing or editing words, editing video, teaching (I've been teaching college since 2009), and hey, I'm an EMT and got my phlebotomy cert a couple years back. I'm versatile! For full-time employment, I am eventually going to try my hand at medicine. I've served as an EMT here in NYC since 2016, and I've been taking science courses post-bac since January 2025, usually 2 or more at once concurrently with... the full time job, my part time adjunct job, and volunteering on said ambulance. Exhaustion set in years ago, lol, so I've settled into something beyond that at this point. I feel like I've been climbing a mountain, and trying to make many things work at once. I had a pretty good rhythm going, truth be told, despite all the burnout. I'm proud of myself for that.

I'd really like to be a physician assistant one day, or potentially a nurse practitioner. It's a very, very long and hard road to either of those paths, but I'm going to make my way as best as I can.

How do I feel? Again, devastated was years ago. We're pretty far past that at this point. What's happened to journalism in America is... a topic for a very depressing, very well-researched book. I hope someone writes that one day. What happened to game journalism... well, it's more of a niche, but I can say only that reporting honestly on layoff after layoff and corporate malfeasance writ large and executives gambling the whole industry down the drain was tough, but somebody had to do it.

But it's not something one can do without editorial independence.

It's dramatic, but I'm going to mourn this career. Twenty years of my life, at 42, is just about half of my days alive. I put a lot, and I do mean *a lot* of myself into this. I tried at all times to lead with empathy and care for the human beings around me and to be as honest and frankly honorable as possible in my work. I really, really tried to live my values in my work in this career, and the only way I can keep that reputation is the path ahead of me.So there it is. Expect to see me making games, making art, teaching game design, writing about games from time to time @VeeGeeBees. Expect to hear more about my adventures as an EMT, and hopefully, soon as a PA student, and eventually, as an advanced practitioner. I've kept telling myself, in the darkest and worst days of the last few years, that I'll fly again, somehow. It'll just look very different.

To sign off, and pull an old favorite out of my pocket: be good, and be good at it.

it kind of feels like if unmasking is a processing of molting, then my verbal communication currently an entire shedded layer. it's definitely OF me. it's me-shaped in some ways. but it's not me. or rather, it's of me, and it's dead (!) and now something else is growing (!!)

one aspect of unmasking i didn't predict: my sudden disassociation from much of my communication (especially speech). i feel like my speech still comes from a very masked, make-the-other-person-comfortable perspective. i don't identify with it as much, but i don't know HOW to express myself...

This is APPALLING. The Trump administration is detaining multiple random Somali immigrants with no criminal record at Guantanamo Bay, seemingly because the White House ordered ICE specifically to detain Somalis at Gitmo as part of its effort to punish an ethnic group Trump has attacked.
According to Mohamed, guards at Guantanamo have said they are being held there because that's what officials in Washington, DC, want. "There's no other nation, only Somali people in Guantanamo Bay, in the prison," he told me. "And when we ask them why we are here, they tell us... Washington...ordered to keep Somali people in the Guantanamo Bay."

This is the most-quintessential Brett Smiley story I have ever heard. Ideology aside, it's so satisfying that this guy ended up as the first incumbent mayor to lose a primary in the history of Providence. This backlash, as much as insurgent left, is the story of Rhode Island's election last week.
Last October, long before the Providence mayoral primary was at the forefront of voters’ minds, a friend was canvassing to get the word out about an upstart progressive challenger named David Morales. She rang at the door of a large house on the East Side, introduced herself as a volunteer for Morales’ campaign, and started her voter-outreach spiel: “What issues do you care about?”

The man at the door, who is apparently harder to recognize when not wearing his signature circle-frame specs, was Brett Smiley. The prospect of polite conversation with an engaged constituent made him visibly uncomfortable. “I don’t want to embarrass you, but I’m the mayor.” He said the issue he cared about was “I’d like to keep my job,” then awkwardly shuffled back inside.

This was pretty benign as far as Smiley stories go. It’s funny, not malicious — unlike, say, his darkening Morales’ skin in a campaign attack ad. Yet it perfectly illustrates the fundamental problem with both Smiley’s administration and his campaign.

Imagine this scene, so saccharine that even Aaron Sorkin would roll his eyes: an idealistic activist gets a surprise audience with the top dog, who in turn has a chance to encourage a youthful constituent’s civic engagement while setting her straight about how things really work at City Hall. In a state that’s hardly known for political energy, a young voter who cares enough about municipal elections to be knocking doors 11 months before a primary is exactly the kind of person with whom a small-city mayor should be thrilled to engage. Instead, Smiley walked away.
