Why does #SpoliaSunday matter? Too often, casual onlookers treat it as a collection of random bric-a-brac rather than what it truly was. In medieval Rome, looting ancient ruins was a high-stakes institutional battle. Take the early C13 porch of S. Giorgio in Velabro. #AncientBluesky 🏺 #Rome
PORTICO, EARLY C13. S. GIORGIO IN VELABRO

Here we see the early C13 brick portico and Romanesque campanile of S. Giorgio in Velabro. The view looks up from the cobblestones, focusing on a row of ancient Roman marble columns with classical capitals protected by an iron gate. Above the columns, the long marble architrave features a crisply carved medieval Latin inscription. The text, translated, reads "Stefano della Stella, desiring to capture heavenly things, rare in eloquence, illustrious with the light of virtues, spending his gold, was eager to renew this porch. At his own expense he made it for you, Saint George, he who was a cleric and prior of this church. This place is called by the name of the Golden Sail." This poetic phrase was a grand medieval mistranslation of Velabrum, the actual name of this ancient marshy district situated between the Forum Boarium and the Forum Romanum.

I sailed on grass and I liked it! Last weekend I had the chance to take a boat trip on the Elbląg Canal (formerly Oberländischer Kanal). I went specifically to experience history - the canal was built in the mid-19th century, and the engineering marvel is still running!

Weimar, the cultural beacon swept up in the storm of the Third Reich
From literary and artistic gem to Nazi stronghold, how a quaint town encapsulated the best and worst in German history and became a byword for a failed experiment in democracy

I started this thread on twitter back in 2017. I add to it occasionally whenever the opportunity offers itself, but want to start it again so I can add to it on here. So… Amazing how grater technology has developed. My current grater (left) and an original 80s grater, the size of a brick!

I did a long post over on Facebook today to mark the anniversary of the sinking of Titanic and to try to give an idea of the dreadful impact it had on Southampton. It’s too long for Bluesky so please find the text below. 1/3

On Good Friday in 2019, during a trip to the Eifel region close to the Belgian border, I came across this cross. I still do not know if this is true but it appears the Christ figure was taken down on purpose. Does anyone know about such an Easter tradition?

After WW2, the Yugoslav Army used lots of AFVs left behind by the Nazis. Among them were a handful of venerable PzKw 38(t) tanks. Interestingly, it seems these small tanks were taken from German armoured trains captured in Yugoslavia. Two such tanks were assigned to each train. 🧵 #TankTuesday 1/
A black & white photo of a German PzKw 38(t) light tank seen from a raised position at a 2 o'clock angle. The tank is parked facing down into a slight dip in the ground. The background is of a flat training ground. The commander's turret hatch & the driver's visor at the tank's right front are open.

A metal pennant to the side of the driver's visor is painted with the Yugoslav flag. On the round armour plate covering the empty hull MG mount, a faded red star is visible. On the turret side we can see the tank's tactical number (555) painted in white as well as a black tank painted in a white circle. The tank is very dusty but is otherwise in good condition.

This vehicle is an Ausf. B, built in 1940 then later refurbished to the standard specified for train escort tanks. So we see the circular armour plate covering the hull MG position, the front Notek light relocated from the mudguard to the hull front and the spare track link storage added to the upper front plate. This tank has also been fitted with a stowage bin with a curved top at the rear. This housed a pre-heating device for the engine.

Photo source is unknown (random internet find), though likely to be from the same series of photos as the others in this thread, held by Medija centar Odbrana.
