This from Terence Tao getting lots of attention. Yes we already have treatments no humans understand. I think the point many are ignoring is the misaligned aspect. Right now our systems validate treatments even if we don’t understand how they work. Will that still be true of AI derived treatments?

And this four in ten foreign born in London thing - it's the most vibrant city in Europe because of its international dynamism. We are talking three generations of change at least. Nonetheless it's very much iconically British. A breathtaking success.

There’s a lot of ambient streaming for background that happens on Spotify etc which will probably get eaten by AI music. I recall an article somewhere that Spotify commissioned covers of tracks to reduce payment costs. Imagine AI will play a part here but as you say that’s not the whole story

The U.K. is not seen as a high tax environment compared to peer countries. But I think ignoring how household expenditure has rapidly increased recently (energy, food etc) misses the full picture of how the public will experience tax rises.

A lack of focus on the public’s experience & expectations of crime is a huge mistake. Yes the data for violent crimes shows decreases. But the experience of the public is more commonly street crime, stolen phones & bikes. All of which drives the sentiments of safety & trust in gov.

Chinese bot farm found influencing datacenter discourse
Global Government Affairs
@GlobalAffairs
X.com
The X Safety team conducted an investigation into suspected Chinese inauthentic accounts involved in influence operations:
We identified a bot farm of approximately 200,000 accounts. Within this farm, we found
200 accounts posting in a manner that could manipulate a legitimate debate about American Al and energy policy.
These posts contained claims that Al data centers are driving up household electricity prices and straining the grid. Others included Al-generated cartoons that depicted data-center operators enriching themselves at the public's expense.
We remain committed to maintaining an open and authentic platform where people debate topics of public interest. We take seriously any attempts to undermine the integrity of the global town square and suspend accounts that violate our Authenticity policy.

Is it? I’d argue there’s 3 dynamics in play: - People are getting better at identifying & sharing AI tells - People are becoming more normalised to AI writing (and to some extent mimic it) - People are intentionally changing their writing to become more noticeably non-AI generated.

It is one of the things that I think is being lost in the good versus evil AI debates. These models, as they are today, are actually capable of solving some very hard, very real problems. I worry that the groups that most try to help people with these problems are those most rejecting AI reflexively

FFS, this is so fucked… 😩 Would it kill the people here to not chase away any tech person who comes here and says something about AI?… I really want tech discussions and communities to hang out here and not on Elon's far-right playground 😐
Mike Masnick @masnick.com:
Multiple people I know have told me that they love the idea of Bluesky, and want it to succeed, but have abandoned it for X because the use agentic tools in their work and find them incredibly useful, and feel that any mention of their usage here leads to hate and ridicule.
I wouldn't bring this up if it was just one person, but it was multiple people since the beginning of August who mentioned in passing something to the effect of either "I'd spend more time on Bluesky if people weren't so anti-AI" *or* "As much as I hate to be there all the useful AI talk is on X."
I'm not saying it's anyone's responsibility to praise AI usage. I agree with much of the criticism of the tool. But for many, many people, it is a useful tech (I have talked about the ways I find it extraordinarily useful, only to have people here mock me, insisting my lived experience is a lie).
I am just noting that for all the people here who say that people should get off X and spend more time here, the reason I keep hearing from people in various circles who would *like* to do that, but don't, is the vociferous belief of many here that there are no possible positive uses of AI.
I'm not telling anyone what to do or what tech to use or what to like or not like. I'm just relaying that the reputation this place now has is one that a large segment of the population who are NOT fascists, saying they don't feel comfortable here because a main area of their interest is...
... considered worthy of being mocked and attacked. And even as I've explained that I've been able to have positive conversations about productive AI usage here with many of you, the reputation of the community here as insisting their own lived experience can't possibly be real has driven them away.
And the thing that tipped me over the edge to posting this here is that three of the people who told me things along these lines are all working on very real solutions to some of the problems of AI

This is an interesting post. I think the negative view of tech is not global. It is absolutely related to the AI leaders messaging, data centres & the fear combined with little widespread upside. But also trust is eroding & I expect it’ll get worse.
