I can tell that games media is in a deeply unhealthy place when I see some of the most talented, experienced, and incisive reporters and critics in the space say they don't know how much longer they can keep on doing the work. The industry is hollowing out and the writing itself is suffering for it.

Games media is not only unhealthy because there aren't jobs. For years, games media (journalism in general, really) has run on a deeply unhealthy system that incentivized the worst kind of writing and devalued the labor of writers and other creators.

100% agree, and I've been trying to beat this drum. We, as PRs, want lots of coverage - but aren't doing enough to support and nurture outlets. We need to include them in our preview and review cycles, our hands-on events, and spend with them! It's why so many outlets are making showcases!

Games media cuts have felt unending for a while, but the mood feels especially grim among indie outlets with the latest wave of layoffs. More than ever, if the game industry values its media, it needs to support them. Buy some advertising, sponsor content, purchase subs. It makes a big difference.

Another thing I really want especially Indie devs to think about before signing with a publisher: what is your plan for marketing our game? Ask to see a schedule, evidence they have done well with other teams, and get express permission to sign off on trailers, press & media. Get things in writing.
