The neutrino, i.e. "little neutral one," is in the Nobel news today. Here I am a few years ago talking about neutrinos and poems about neutrinos from my book named after a neutrino observatory. Hashtag neutrino. Hashtag FWIW. theauthorsbookclub.ca/2020/05/27/t...

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Breaking Bad continues to be overrated. The show ditched the moral ambiguity (and complexity) of Walter White around season 3. —he stopped breaking, settled into bad. The show became another plot-driven narrative. I realize I’m howling at the moon here…

Just looked up the slogan. That’s some low hanging fruit. I’m already misremembering it as the idiom it so very nearly is.

Ha, a microexample of what we've been talking about, re critical engagement. Appreciated, Catherine!

My guess is that they were mixed reviews? Critical but with some mention of what works? Not wanting to publish a slam is one thing. Avoiding all critical engagement only enervates the praise anyway.

Missed this. Would be interested in reading it. The difference between American and Canadian poetry is real whether we talk about it or not.

Short answer, I think: we've lost the ability (or desire) to separate the art from the artist.

Q: Who is the Canadian Carl Phillips? Longlined, recursive, abstract, metaphysical lyric. Poems that would not survive a workshop and better for it.

Now that Canadian publications flatly refuse to publish critical reviews--how is that going for us? Do we have a more vibrant literary dialogue? Gushing replies only, please.

I think the leafs are at the “throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks” phase of roster construction. In that context, this is a 10 out of 10. 🍝

As a Leafs' fan I too tend to galaxy-brain roster moves--what does this signing mean for the team I'll be watching 6 years from now? etc. But damn, you have to spend your money on something. And from a division rival too. Let's just have something nice, I say.

So for instance, how about a 20 grand prize or grant for book reviewers so they can actually make a living doing this important work for a period of time instead of getting $50-150 per review and most mags only "allowing" one to write one review A YEAR! Reviews are vital for writers, no?
