RIP Wendell Berry. I've thought about this poem. 'Our Real Work', a lot since starting on Confluence with @julietgutch It reminds me of Paul Valéry : “Une difficulté est une lumière. Une difficulté insurmontable est un soleil." : “A difficulty is a light. An insurmountable difficulty is a sun”.

It may be that when we no longer know what to do/we have come to our real work,/and that when we no longer know which way to go/we have come to our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed./The impeded stream is the one that sings

I didn't own CDs until the late 80s, but the first one I listened to was on the night shift at Zellers when I was a teenager. Here's a poem about the experience as it appeared in @westendphoenix.bsky.social
SO FAR AWAY

Nights on the graveyard shift at Zellers

By Phillip Crymble

Each evening, with his tie uncinched, the manager would lock me in and make towards his Town & Country K-Car.
The punch clock in the stockroom was an Acroprint that sounded like an old pneumatic nail gun. A teenaged third-shift
menial in stonewashed jeans and high-top leather Reeboks, I'd sail around the shop floor on the fork rods of a pallet jack
the checkout lanes and grocery aisles as empty as a Universal backlot. At sun-up, all my jobs complete undone and stoned
on black hashish I'd crank the Dire Straits CD the sales staff always used for demonstration fly past bargain bins and end
caps like an outlaw on a handcar in a silent-era comedy. The drag-wind in my hockey hair. The rumble of the wheels beneath my feet.

Mary Ruefle on The Odyssey.
Deconstruction
I think the sirens in the Odyssey sang the Odyssey, for there is nothing more seductive, more terrible, than the story of our own life, the one we do not want to hear and will do anything to listen to.

Today's weather putting me in mind of this poem by David Berman
Community College in the Rain

Announcement: All pupils named Doug. Please come to the lounge on Concourse K.
Please join us for coffee and remarks.
Dougs: We cannot come. We are injured by golf cleats.
Announcement: Today we will discuss the energy in a wing and something about first basemen.
Ribs will be served in the cafeteria.
Pep Club: We will rally against golf cleats today. The rally will be held behind the gymnasium.
There is a Model T in the parking lot with its lights on.
Dougs: We are dying in the nurse's office.
When she passes before the window, she looks like a bride.
Karen (whispers): We are ranking the great shipwrecks.
Announcement: In the classroom filled with dishwater light,
Share your thoughts on public sculpture.
All: O Dougs, where are you?
Dougs: In the wild hotels of the sea.

Oil & Steel

My father lived in a dirty-dish mausoleum,
watching a portable black-and-white television,
reading the Encyclopaedia Britannica,
which he preferred to Modern Fiction.
One by one, his schnauzers died of liver disease,
except the one that guarded his corpse
found holding a tumbler of Bushmills.
"Dead is dead,” he would say, an antipreacher.
I took a plaid shirt from the bedroom closet
and some motor oil-my inheritance.
Once I saw him weep in a courtroom—
neglected, needing nursing-this man who never showed
me much affection but gave me a knack
for solitude, which has been mostly useful.
