You have more in common with the people of Iran than you do with anyone in this administration, any member of the technocracy, anyone who is profiting from this war, or any billionaire. When you see Iranians forming human chains outside key infrastructure sites, you should feel a sense of kinship.

I have a joke about game development, but since the reorg it’s no longer strategically aligned with our vision. It was a hard choice, but the joke’s position had to be eliminated.

from Eisenhower's April 1953 "Chance For Peace" speech
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.

It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.

It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway.

We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.

We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road. the world has been taking.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

Okay troublemakers, punks, antifa supervillains, and anyone who just enjoys being a petty little shitbird while they fuck up the algorithm of a massive media corp. Here's your assignment for the weekend. Get on it and spread the word.
Get in. We're messing up Melania's Amazon search results.
This weekend, Amazon is premiering it's $40 million Melania Trump documentary. It already seems to be a flop.
But we're going to take it one step further by messing up Melania's Amazon search results. Specifically, we're going to amplify the paranormal erotic thriller, Melania: Devourer of Men so it ranks higher than her movie.
The book is perfect: it's absurd, the cover is ridiculous, and it's free, so we're not giving Amazon any money.
We need people to:
1. "buy" the book (it's free)
2. Share this post and get other people to buy the book.
That's it. Then we can celebrate as an erotic novel about a bat monster Melania Trump becomes a higher and higher search result on Amazon.

Text. It reads: Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to? You will never find that life for which you are looking. When the gods created man they allotted to him death, but life they retained in their own keeping. As for you, Gilgamesh, fill your belly with good things; day and night, night and day, dance and be merry, feast and rejoice. Let your clothes be fresh, bathe yourself in water, cherish the little child that holds your hand, and make your wife happy in your embrace; for this too is the lot of man.

I like this definition of politics. There is almost no sense of collective responsibility in public policy these days (or at least, in the bits I pay attention to), just partisan jostling for victory.
I fear, though, that there's something else. Our ruling class has forgotten what good politics even is.
It is, at root, the solving (or at least amelioration) of collective action problems - the fact that our individual plans and actions don't naturally yield a well-functioning society. So, for example, we need a collective agreement to provide public services.
Which of course entails a trade-off: better public services mean less private consumption. The job of politicians in a well-functioning polity is to recognise these trade-offs and to argue for their preferred choice.
