A cotton T-shirt takes roughly 2,700 litres of water to produce, about what one person drinks in two and a half years, and most of that water is pulled from irrigation-stressed river basins in Central and South Asia thousands of kilometres from where the shirt is eventually sold
The water crisis hidden in your closet begins thousands of kilometres away, in drought-stricken river basins where cotton farmers drain aquifers to grow the shirt on your back.

Workers told me the factory's machines kept failing in bizarre ways. Robots caught fire. The plant’s signature device cracked the steel artillery shells. Sometimes staff had to pound machines with sledgehammers to get them to work right. They still botched most shells.

The upsides of the strategy are clear: if you use Trojan horses, you not only do not have to defend the ideas you are promoting, but you don't even have to cop to promoting them. Because, in an important sense, you *aren't* - you are relying on history and your audience to do it for you. 10/

All you have to do is find things that cue up the bigotry you want to promote, and make them salient - preferably, while avoiding the same for context that would complicate your intended narrative (in a distracted, low-participation political culture, the last bit comes practically for free). 8/

The propaganda was not in the textbook's sentences themselves, so much as in the way they teed up epistemic and political problems in the world outside of the textbook (hence "Trojan horse propaganda"). Woodson's case is sort of best case scenario: we can imagine innocuous textbook authors. 6/

Not a conspiracy. The tech industry generally targets edtech and defense. General users are important, but the real, long term cash flow is in education and defense. They will often pour lots of money in, and once they have enough investment it's harder for them to pull out.
