In his 1995 paper, "Necessity and chance: deterministic chaos in ecology and evolution", Robert May reminds us that very simple & fully deterministic rules can produce time series that look like random noise - and thus explain some complex biological phenomena. He ends the paper with enthusiasm:

Graphic showing logos for ABS and ABS 2026 and photos of Vanessa and Liz. Title: The Beginner's Guide to Agent-Based Modeling for Animal Behavior. ABS Cincinnati: July 14, 2026, 9:00am-5:00pm. Workshop overview: In this hands-on workshop, we will give you the conceptual foundations and skills to help you build your own agent-based model (ABM) of animal behavior from scratch - just bring your laptop and your imagination! In agent-based modeling, you define the actions of animals, let them interact with their environment and each other, and observe and quantify the patterns that emerge over time. ABMs are powerful tools for gaining insight into the forces that shape complex systems and dynamics in animal behavior, ecology, and evolution. ABMs are also a great way to improve our theories about animal behavior because they force us to formalize our favorite verbal theories, put all of our assumptions under a metaphorical microscope, and check whether everything plays out the way we’d expect - or not!

A rendered illustration of a splendid fairywren, puffed out and electric blue, crouching slightly on a stick-perch and pointing its body to the left. Its tail sticks up and out, similar to a wren, but it is not technically a wren. Behind the bird are two light blue, to frame the bird. An American ‘police’ officer in military fatigues, a helmet, and gas mask, carrying an assault rifle. He’s cosplaying being a soldier so he can fulfil his racist power-fantasy.A heavily-armed FBI agent in military fatigues, body armour and a helmet. His back is to the camera: he’s facing an armoured car covered in police-officers kitted out like soldiers in a war zone. All of them are dickheads.

In case you need a TL cleanse, someone brought a wee baby skunk to Newhouse Wildlife Rescue
A rescue worker holding a teenie tiny baby skunk in one hand with a purple rubber glove.

Text from original post:
“He was born a runt and literally half the size of his siblings. When their mother passed away, his siblings left their den within 48 hours of her disappearance. They were bigger, stronger and healthier. Somehow this little one managed to get the strength to finally exit the den after FOUR DAYS without mom. He was thin, very dehydrated and had fly eggs on him when he his caring finders rescued him this morning.

He may be tiny, but he’s a tough little guy. Not many could survive what he already endured. Sometimes big things truly come in tiny packages.

Welcome to the rescue, little one…”
