i remain so alarmed by all the discourse about how people can use AI to get good deals / fight wage theft / counteract extractive insurance practices that doesn’t acknowledge that — if you accept this works — the companies on the other side … also can use it to do the opposite?

For me at least, it feels like there is definitely an LLM at play, if only in the diagrams, but at the same time, I found the analysis good enough to look past. Worth a read, if you ever think about the drastic things people will do as the climate heats up.

I really appreciate how the author compares the costs to that of nuclear, in terms of needing to account for the often-left-out costs of insurance against things going south, like with termination shock (i.e. the heat rebound when SRM stops)

I know most of you guys don't go on the other app but the pope posted an anti AI/ pro artists statement yesterday, and the ensuing cope and memes is really funny
Pope Leo XIV
@Pontifex

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.2016: I will never fight a holy war

2019: Pope Leo I am ready launch me towards the nearest data centersome AI guy saying he makes christian children's books with AI asking the pope if that is ok then and someone posting a meme react with the pope holding a baseball bat saying 'did I stutter'

TBH i saw that too, and I found the use of a generated image there pretty jarring myself - did it add much that finding an image wouldn’t have added? Then it occurred to me it’s a way to talk about an industry without accusing a specific player in it - especially if you work in it.

my boy @mrchrisadams.net did the calcs on this - a $1m fine, for a facility that gets paid $290m a month. www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...

I did some quick napkin maths calculation on this. If the guardian article mentions 300MW replacing these engines, I think that 1 million dollar fee represents about 3-5 days of fuels costs for the 45 Bergen generators.

Microsoft has a 17bn dollar, 5 year deal with Nebius for the compute.

Nebius is paying DataOne to build the actual datacentres, and provide the generators to power them.

Moreover, a 17bn dollar deal, if you divide it by 60 months, is what? 290 million dollars per month?

What good is a 1million dollar fine if you're being paid 290 milion dollars by Microsoft, per month for it, who presumably are selling the compute for *more than* 290 million dollars per month?

No wonder they were happy to be allowed to keep running it - the cost of switching off the servers for a month would have been hundreds of times the cost of the fine.

One I hadn’t seen before was the notion of having an excise tax on electricity consumption, that gets recirculated into a public fund to various purposes, like rate relief, infrastructure investment that would otherwise be less likely, and so on. Using the IRS to collect it is tho is interesting
