I came across a great photo of a Mooneye, Hiodon tergisus, from the St. Croix watershed in Minnesota. Photo by Drew Geving. Minnesota is working to implement new protections for "native rough fishes" such as Mooneye and Bowfin. It's the first US state to do so, finally. 🧪🌍🐟 #TeamFish

Welp due to overwhelming demand (=one[1] nudge from the inimitable @jopabinia.bsky.social) I'm making an informational comic about dicyemids #invertefest 🦑🌊 I do not know how long it will take to finish, so please enjoy the heck out of this title page for now
Outlined in pen and inexpertly colored with alcohol markers, this square drawing contains the title text "DICYEMIDS a.k.a. octopus pee worms" above a cartoon of three fish yelling "EWW" at an octopus, who smugly responds, "You're all jealous that you don't have your own private parasitic phylum." Inside the mantle (body) of the octopus, its kidney is labelled, and a zoomed-out view from inside the kidney shows three strange blorpy wiggly worm things. (They are dicyemids.)

Pritzker: It’s time for us to be done with optimism about their motives. Time to stop wondering if you can trust the nuclear codes to people who don’t know how to organize a group chat. It’s time to stop ignoring the hypocrisy in wearing a big gold cross while announcing the defunding of children’s cancer research… Autistic kids and adults who are loving contributors to our society don’t deserve to be stigmatized by a weird nepo baby who once stashed a dead bear in his car. Our military service members don’t deserve to be told by a washed-up Fox TV commentator, who drank too much before being appointed Secretary of Defense, that they can’t serve their country simply because they are Black, gay, or a woman.

Redhorse ID can be confusing, even for professionals, so I made these cheatsheets (in 2011!). They have since been used by state agencies, labs, and many anglers. PDF downloads aren't working on my site, so here they are as images. Share wherever it might be useful. #redhorse #nativefish #fishing

Of the 3 gar species found in the #GreatLakes, it's pretty easy to distinguish the longnose gar by its long, narrow snout that’s >2x as long as the rest of the head. While they do have some spots (more than the shortnose but fewer than the spotted), the schnoz really gives them away #25DaysofFishmas

The common name “bowfin” refers to the long curved fin on their back. This distinctive dorsal fin propels them both forward + backward using wave-like undulations - a type of movement known as (the seasonally-appropriate) "ribbon-fin locomotion" 🎁 #25DaysofFishmas
