Saturday is a bank holiday in Berlin so I guess stock up on food on Friday and then come and see us all reading at the Grüner Salon. That’s my plan anyway. I’ll read a world exclusive from my unedited translation of Clemens Meyer’s The Projectionists, at 3:30.
Fitzcarraldo x DAAD, it says, and then it tells you we’ll be in the Grüner Salon from 3 to 10 on Saturday. We being Ed Atkins, Chris Shields, Kirsty Bell, me, Vincenzo Latronico, Vanessa Onweumezi, Maria Stepanova and Saskia Vogel. There’s also readings from Alexievich, Melchor, Tokarczuk, Gombriwicz and others, done by Hanne Lippard and Tanasgol Sabbagh.

Are you horrified by the German press’s attempts to get the corrupt CDU back into Berlin’s Rotes Rathaus by flinging accusations at die Linke? On the super-local level, I’m glad my local council in Berlin-Mitte will probably be Linke/Green now. But concerned that Beatr*x from the #NoAfD will be on it too, along with 4 others. She’s already an MP, can’t quite get my head round what it will mean in practice. www.rbb24.de/politik/berl...

The AfD’s victory was principally a mobilisation surge. The extraordinary increase in turnout - from 60.3% to around 76.5% was overwhelmingly advantageous to the AfD. People who had withdrawn from politics did not return to defend the centre; they returned to punish it

The demographic which voted the least for the AfD was socialized entirely in the GDR, the highest share at 53% (35-44) were children or infants when the wall came down and 42% of those born in the 21st century voted for them.

We had a very detailed conversation about dashes in 19th-C German prose and contemporary writing at our translation lab tonight, and reached no conclusions. Also: whether to excise racism in historical texts during translation. All part of the delight of hanging with translators.

My last shout for V&Q Books, the anthology I always wanted to exist. Out today in UK, Ireland, DACH.
It’s a pink and black paperback, BERLIN BABEL, featuring Berlin’s TV tower from below, in front of a fridge full of drinks. There’s a sign written in Cyrillic letters. I don’t know what language it is but I know it means: Choose first, then open.
