When a good movie has good writing and so-so directing, everyone is perfectly content to just call it a good movie… unless that movie is made by Aaron Sorkin

No matter how headache-inducingly awful the new Avengers movie winds up being, I highly doubt anybody is going to tell you to wait for it to hit streaming. I don’t understand why we should be treating ambitious new releases like Digger any differently.

Still seeing a lot of “You could never make Seinfeld today,” and… if you could make Curb Your Enthusiasm today, you could probably make Seinfeld.

Hope has some really stylish action filmmaking, but it runs out of ideas fast and the CGI is distractingly bad. Probably going to skip the sequel.

Resident Evil is awesome. And this is coming from someone who has never seen a Resident Evil movie or played the game and didn’t even like Zach Cregger’s last movie.

Sick of people telling me a show “gets” good. If you’d click off a movie because the first five minutes didn’t grab you, then I don’t understand why anyone would suffer through hours of mediocrity.

morganforrest.bsky.social @morganforrest.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Furious starts off fresh and exciting but in its last three episodes the show becomes an endless parade of exposition scenes interrupted by the occasional raunchy joke or violent outburst. There’s some good stuff here and there, but on the whole it’s quite the disappointment.

"You want my position on trans people competing in women's sports? Which ones? Name them, specificially. If it's such a sweeping societal problem, you must have a list of trans athletes. Who exactly are we talking about, and what sports do they play?" Reject the framing. It's that easy.

Should go without saying, but trans people are people, not a fucking debate topic. Until we can all agree on that, there’s really no point in discussing anything else about them.

Watching the Salman episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Seriously one of the best of the show. The main attraction is Salman himself. His dialogue combines the crassness of the show with the ornate prose of an expert novelist. Never thought I’d hear the words “sexy pixie dust,” but I’m so glad I did.

I said that I loved much of Nolan’s work, but I thought he lacked the visual imagination of Spielberg and Zemeckis. The Nolanites flooded me with angry messages that completely skipped over the part where I said I loved his movies.

There’s a bit later in The Odyssey where Odysseus is getting surrounded and poked by spears and Telemachus screams “Dad!” and throws him a new weapon. It still makes me smile. One of my favorite moments in any Nolan movie.

It really doesn’t have to be different. A large part of why the Bond franchise is so beloved across generations is that its staples are consistent and instantly recognizable. Straying a little is fine and maybe even necessary, but radical transformation defies what makes a Bond movie a Bond movie.

A large part of what makes the train sequence from Spider-Man 2 so great is how the citizens don’t immediately fawn over and cheer for Spider-Man. He earns their respect by being a goddamn hero, making it all the more impactful when, inspired by him, they risk their lives standing up to Doc Ock.

RIP Vincent Pastore. Playing the turncoat mobster Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero on The Sopranos was of course his biggest accomplishment. But he wasn't that guy. When I think of him, I see him sitting on the set wearing a teal cardigan and eyeglasses with a chain, reading The New York Times.
Screenshot of actor, Vincent, Pastor from the Sopranos, a heavyset man with dark, curly hair, dark eyebrows, and big hands, wearing a white T-shirt with a dark blue, black trimmed robe over it. He's standing on the terrace of an apartment near a cemetery, holding a newspaper.

I’m very much still processing The Odyssey, but I want to highlight John Leguizamo’s performance as the blind swineherd Eumaeus. The casting is brilliant. He disappears into the role in a way that a capital M movie star could never and he does it without stealing the limelight from the main cast.

The Hustler is such a terrific example of early widescreen, in this case a drama instead of a sword-and-sandal epic. Hardly a scene goes by without some staggering composition.

Christopher Nolan, for all his flaws, makes real movies that even people who sop up all the content slop inherently realize is an example of how things used to be before everything was half-assed and done in a green screen soundstage.

Recently rewatched Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog and was awestruck by how the film translates the textures of surfaces and objects to screen. One of those rare cases where a director uses closeups not for dramatic intensity but to make a film’s world more tangible and alive.

Finally got around to watching that Chernobyl miniseries, and it’s… solid. I wish the characters evolved more and that the dialogue was less stilted, but all five episodes are well made and acted, with many standalone scenes and images that effectively communicate important themes and concepts.
