The Cornell story is horrific, but I’d like to shine a light on what happened at LSU with a current football player on the team:
In July, the school found Shanklin responsible for "forcible rape" and issued a one-year suspension, which is a full ban from campus and activities, according to documents reviewed by ESPN. After Shanklin appealed, an administrative law judge who handles appeals per LSU policy upheld the finding that the athlete was responsible for "forcible rape," but reduced the punishment to four semesters of probation with no restrictions, which allows Shanklin to remain enrolled and on campus and to participate in activities as long as he stays out of trouble.

re the death penalty, the Detrumpification/reconstruction of the Federal judiciary and jurisprudence will have to involve a lot of (in substance) revisiting Brennan and Thurgood Marshall dissents and saying "this was correct, and is the law now."

Not a lawyer, but "SEC. 209. ENEPA TECHNOLOGIES" (pages 74-94) appears to require creation of AI tools for a) company use to generate environmental docs and b) agency use to review environmental docs. AI-generated forms reviewed by AI tools in understaffed/underfunded agencies! What could go wrong.

Cornell University punishing rapists with essay assignments and a Kavanaugh Supreme Court majority lawlessly decreeing that a woman should be executed before consideration of whether her repeated rape as a child contributed to her crime are not separate phenomena; they are part of a single continuum

The question presented here couldn't be more consequential. Answering "yes" would require the detention--without any possibility of a bond hearing--of millions of immigrants currently residing in the United States.

the ICC may not technically be a subsidiary of the United Nations, but the Rome Statute was very much a product of UN processes. if you have an ICC warrant and show up at the United Nations, you should be arrested and sent to the Hague 100% of the time

I think there's some truth to this, but both COVID and AI can only be fully understood within the the larger context of the unacknowledged or unprocessed reality of climate change/ecological crisis. I.e. COVID is not the container for AI; climate is the container for them both

to be humorless for a moment in response to a joke: this post made me realize it's a bit surprising no major figure in the AI space has gone super-Latourian to justify why companies shouldn't be held liable for their products. the models are actants, they have their own agency!

Alright. Let me resolve this once and for all. The simple fact is that there are a few different things that can be reasonably meant by “thinking” and mixing them up is what’s making everyone mad.

LLMs are often labeled "plagiarism machines" (especially by those with a intellectual property-focused critique of AI, which I find one of the most misguided) but that implies an intentionality they don't have. I think it would be more accurate, and clarifying, to call LLMs cliché machines

I also continue to believe that my mental model is the best one, which does not conceptualize the “agents” as discrete entities, but rather as the protagonists in a story that the LLM has been trained to write about a cool little guy who goes on hacker adventures.

Also? Because climate impacts are nonlinear in global surface temperature rise, "the next gigatonne of climate pollution will cause more suffering and death than the previous gigatonne" will remain true for the rest of our lives. The case for mitigation gets stronger the more we emit.

demolishing the 'ballroom' after the fall of the regime would be a too-easy gesture of 'returning to normal' as if Trump never happened. it should remain as a warning about executive power at its seat, a space for the public so that no White House can presume to cut itself off from the people
