While bills and rent will absolutely try to convince you that life is a non-stop onslaught of punishment, partaking in at least one little hobby will do so so much more for your long-term mental health than pessimistically resigning yourself to your job or doomscrolling on your phone ever will.

I genuinely mean this. I cannot imagine a more bleak dystopian notion than the idea of all art being turned into slop designed to coddle my exact perceived intentions. The point of literature, film, music, and art is to be exposed to the interior lives of others. Who are these people.

Reading about Colditz the other day like "The British POWs used rehearsals for their pantomime drag show or whatever to cover up the sound of digging" and I was like damn Nazi POW camps had better social activity provision than my secondary school

the bbc dutifully doing as much as possible to foreground this part of the report in headlines and not the "Streeting was wrong" element is also disappointing but not surprising

excerpt from where I'm messing with little character interactions, rooted in possible plot things that may or may not stay in the story. just bc it's fun to make characters talk to each other. and good practice too

What can I do for you, Miroslaw?”
“Computer report new pairing on runt vascometrics.”
Marie understood immediately what was happening.
Shit. He got a notification. Must be because he’s Thom’s manager—
“I command vessel. You not do this. Is not permitted pair REZQ contractor vascometrics. Must ask me.”
Miroslaw stepped fully into the room and, as usual, stood too close to Marie. She did not step back, but looked straight up at him with her eye fixed and steady.
“I’m sorry, Miroslaw; I had no choice. The drive’s expiry had been set too early; I had to key it to someone’s vascometrics to confirm it was needed, or the drive would self-erase. Thom was closest.”
“Now Thom essential to job. Cannot do job without runt alive.”
“Yes.”
“Is not good. He weak. He may die before we arrive. I see often on long job.”
“Then you’ll just have to be careful with him.”
“What this mean?”
“You know what I mean.”
Miroslaw smirked.

yeah this is the kind of thing. I don't think it's wrong to expect people with shared cultural points of reference to internalise them and produce art with those things as an animating premise, but they can be all-consuming and impenetrable if you're on the fringes of that culture for diff reasons

if I've learned one thing from looking out of the window it is that birds truly do fucking love to sit on the handle of a spade... just like the simulations

AuThom🎃🏳️‍🌈 @mongreldog.bsky.social · 7h

i think essentially it's the old tension: ppl say they want new and different things but really they want the same thing again but made to feel new. I'm not immune to that either. But trying to balance comforting legibility with novelty and ambition is insanely hard to judge

060

AuThom🎃🏳️‍🌈 @mongreldog.bsky.social · 7h

equally though BC I'm not exactly trying to write literary fiction and i rely on the sensibilities of readers of SF or fantasy to make my own stuff legible, taking certain things for granted, I can't and wouldn't be like "this fiction is not for you D&D guys". it is! i just worry it's inaccessible

170

AuThom🎃🏳️‍🌈 @mongreldog.bsky.social · 7h

it does make it harder to produce fiction outside of these structures. if you're trying to create characters or stories that are a bit more rooted in human psychology, which does not conform to these things, reader expectations are subverted but not in a way they are going to enjoy

160

AuThom🎃🏳️‍🌈 @mongreldog.bsky.social · 7h

I can't talk because obv my own work is a total patchwork of tropes, like almost everything in digital postmodernity, and I'm not judging really - rather, seeing it from "outside", it is striking how much of a common and unexamined cultural currency this has become

170

AuThom🎃🏳️‍🌈 @mongreldog.bsky.social · 7h

so whenever i see a comic or story or whatever that is rooted in generic D&D tropes or archetypes I'm just like, sure but can we step outside these for a minute

1120

AuThom🎃🏳️‍🌈 @mongreldog.bsky.social · 8h

i had a weird nerd origin story where i didn't come up reading fantasy or playing D&D so the kind of taking of these tropes and terminology as givens / a kind of shared cultural fabric, like the Classics are to the privately educated, has never really taken for me
