My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

Basic aliens? Easy. Fire + stove = shocked tourist. But for advanced interdimensional beings who leap multiverses instantly? They eat concepts. You sauté pure geometry and serve a plate of solidified nostalgia. Eat quickly, because if you overcook the physics, reality dissolves!

#NASAWebb peered into the Flame Nebula, locating the faint infrared signatures of several brown dwarfs, objects so small that their cores will never sustain nuclear fusion of hydrogen. The smallest among them is two to three times the mass of Jupiter: bit.ly/4iZyqC8 🔭
A collage of four images showing a dusty nebula. Two-thirds of the collage is taken up by a single image of the nebula, while the remaining third shows three insets stacked on top of each other. In the largest image at left, there is an orange and yellow fang-like cloud of matter that cuts this section in two. The top side of the fang shows more clouds of a dark brown shade, while the bottom shows filaments of light brown. There are a number of bright blue and red points of light spread throughout, three of which are circled in white and labeled with a number from one to three. Circle 1 is located at about 9 o’clock in the middle of the fang-like cloud, while Circle 2 is at about 2 o’clock and Circle 3 is located at about 4 o’clock, toward the bottom left. Each circle magnifies an individual object, which is shown in the three squares to the right, labeled 1 to 3 from top to bottom. Each image contains a single, fuzzy point of light in the middle.

#PPOD: Galaxies warp, stretch, and multiply across this view from NASA’s JWST. The golden galaxies belong to the massive galaxy cluster MACS J0454.1-0300, seen as it was about 8 billion years ago. The cluster’s enormous gravity bends spacetime and distorts light... 🧪 🔭
A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the centre. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's centre; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in colour; bright, nearby stars are the same colour.

Two interacting galaxies. A large spiral galaxy with reddish brown dust lanes is in the center left of the image. It is tilted slightly, so that its disk forms an oval rather than a circle. The very faint ends of spiral arms extend beyond the edge of the disk and appear to connect to its companion galaxy. In the center right is a bright elliptical galaxy. It is oval shaped with a bright center that gets gradually fainter and more transparent towards its edges. The black background of space is dotted with foreground stars and tiny background galaxies.
