The building blocks of one of the most complex flagellar nanomachines
Nature Microbiology, Published online: 03 February 2026; doi:10.1038/s41564-026-02275-wA near-complete model for the complex structure of the Campylobacter jejuni flagellar motor revealed different mechanisms of assembly, activation and stability from the simple ‘classical’ flagellar model. Some of the additional motor structures in C. jejuni are conserved and only found in species of Campylobacterota, whose ancestor likely co-opted type IV pilus components from bacteria in the deep ocean.

#MachineLearning methods are used to predict #AntimicrobialResistance #AMR from genomic data. @lbarquist.bsky.social &co show that sampling biases driven by population structure severely undermine the accuracy of AMR prediction models even with large datasets @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4iZ0zXQ
Bacterial population structure and clade-specific sampling affect machine learning predictions of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Top: An illustration of defining clades for genomes in one species. R: resistant (triangles), S: susceptible (circles). Bottom left: An example of training scenarios for scheme B based on the clade splitting in shown above. Models were trained on all samples except for resistant or susceptible samples from one clade. The held-out genomes from the same clade were used as the test sets. Bottom right: The precision and recall scores for scheme B; a-random and b-random indicate testing on random train-test splits of the pathological unbalanced data.

How are bacterial transport machineries regulated by external cues? @brochadolab.bsky.social &co identify environmental chemicals that regulate #transporter transcription, identifying the TF Rob as a key modulator of #EffluxPump expression in #Ecoli #AMR @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/46pUM9Q
Left: Compound-promoter interaction network. Fifty-three significant compound-promoter interactions are shown as edges in a Sankey diagram connecting the compounds (left, source nodes) to the promoters (right, target nodes). Edge thickness represents mean Z-scores (n = 8), while node size represents the total number of interactions. Right: Proposed model for the molecular mechanism of caffeine-ciprofloxacin antagonism. Caffeine triggers expression of MicF small RNA in a Rob-dependent manner, which then binds to the 5′-UTR of ompF mRNA to inhibit and decrease OmpF protein levels. This ultimately prevents ciprofloxacin from entering the cell, resulting in caffeine-ciprofloxacin antagonism
