Was driving yesterday evening along a narrow country road and saw many deer. There just wasn't anywhere to pull over, until finally I found a spot. It was the day's last rays of light with magical mist. #Stunday #Deer #white-tailed #Mist #Nature #valkohäntäkauris #luonto #ECK

More than 70 people just tasted apples with us at the San Juan Island Grange (I think that's about 10x how many came last year!)

A traditional Japanese tea room (chashitsu) featuring tatami mat flooring, rustic earthen walls, shoji paper windows, and a curved natural wood pillar (tokobashira).
Framed within the quiet dimness of an intimate tea room (chashitsu), a curved, natural wood pillar (tokobashira) arches gracefully upward from smooth straw-gold tatami mat flooring. Bathed in soft, muted light filtered through translucent paper windows (shōji), the rustic clay plaster walls feature a traditional white papered base (koshi-bari), creating a clean lower border along the floor. Resting on the tatami, a carefully arranged set of tea ceremony utensils—a stoneware tea bowl (chawan) with a bamboo whisk (chasen), a silk-wrapped tea caddy (chaire in shifuku), and a glazed water jar (mizusashi) with a dark lacquered lid—awaits the preparation of matcha. Suspended in the corner above, rustic floating wooden shelves (tsuri-dana) hold a small vessel in the ambient shadow. The room exudes a deeply contemplative sensory atmosphere: the crisp, dry aroma of woven rushes (igusa) and aged cedar, the faint, comforting scent of damp clay plaster, the soft rustle of silk robes across straw mats, and the quiet, expectant stillness of a ritual gathering. Rooted in the sukiya-zukuri architectural style perfected during the Azuchi-Momoyama period by tea masters such as Sen no Rikyū, this sanctuary embodies the humble spirit of wabi-cha (rustic tea culture). Rejecting the ostentatious luxury of feudal court displays, the design elevates unpretentious, natural materials—unplaned logs, river clay plaster mixed with rice straw, woven rushes, and handmade mulberry paper. The prominent use of an irregular, curved pillar (tokobashira) deliberately honors the organic contours of nature, celebrating timber in its unaltered state rather than square, machine-milled wood.

It is beautiful to be alone. To be alone does not mean to be lonely. It means the mind is not influenced and contaminated by society. Jiddu Krishnamurti Katja Lang _ Vom ersten Herbst (fanal)
A solitary, gnarled tree rises from a misty, dark foreground, whilst its sparse foliage stands out against a light grey, textured sky. To the left of it, a small human figure is depicted.

Speaking of now-obscure apple varieties: Some years ago, a former student, knowing of my interest in books, art, and gardens, was kind enough to give me this 1851 lithograph of an apple as a gift. No one today has heard of the Pomfret Russet, but it was typical of a favored type
lithograph with three different images of the apple, arranged in a pyramid

top: green apple, cut in half
lower left: ripe, yellowish apple
lower right: green apple

From Ebenezer Emmons, Agriculture opf New-York . . . (Albany, 1851)

#ResistanceRoots Johnny Appleseed was born on this day in 1774 in Leominster, Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was a real person, and he planted a lot of apple trees, but he mainly sold them to make hard cider. He was also a pacifist, altruistic, revered nature and respected Indigenous tribes. /1
Johnny Appleseed. The romanticized image of Johnny Appleseed handing out sweet, shiny apples for children to bite into is a myth popularized much later. In the 1800s, the American frontier ran on alcohol. Water supplies weren’t safe to drink. Because fermenting killed off pathogens, hard cider became the primary daily beverage for entire families — even children. The average frontier settler drank 10.5 ounces of hard cider per day. Because Appleseed refused to graft trees due to his religious beliefs, his apples were genetically unpredictable, small and bitter. Known as “spitters” because you’d spit them out if you tried to eat them raw, these tart apples were perfect for pressing into hard cider. Resourceful frontier families used them for other staples as well, including apple butter, applesauce and livestock feed, and used a process called “freeze distillation” to make applejack. Note, however, that Appleseed rarely sold apples. He sold the young saplings and the land itself.
