Morally fucked up how the rich get rewarded for making themselves richer and the world worse. You took out student loans and are still paying them off? You're financially irresponsible. Nearly run a multibillion dollar company into the ground? Here's your hundreds of millions in severance.

I still go to Xitter for work stuff at times. It always amazes (disgusts?) me how so many people I used to chat with all the time are just posting through the site being owned by one of the globe's leading fascist propagandists.

This is now the second time William Sanford has used OCF to drop a sloppy, last-minute allegation against a candidate right before an election that was later tossed by DC BOE. In both cases Kenyan McDuffie stood to benefit. We need an investigation into Sanford and reforms to OCF now.

In Joey's chart, mass transit is rail transit but not commuter rail. It also counts less than the total the agencies spend since it includes only the permanent structures and not e.g. all the equipment in a maintenance facility. www.census.gov/construction...

People like to complain about the Dulles station placement but I think the worst feature of that path is the way the metro/parking garage tunnel connects to the terminal itself.

Matt @mldickens.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Cleveland one of the better ones in the US, in terms of path from the terminal to the train. Atlanta is also about as close as you can be without being under the terminal.

Jose Andres is the absolute GOAT. turbolib who has brought meals to disaster zones after the Haiti earthquake & to war-stricken families in Ukraine and Gaza and now he’s YIMBYposting in the face of Spain’s severe housing shortage

Incredible to see the "experts" on resolving the housing emergency that Spain is experiencing! On every television! @telediario_tve @ANoticias
@tele5_noticias @noticias_cuatro The reality is that we have politicians who try to create decrees and solutions when they lack the preparation or knowledge to devise a real solution to the problem we're facing.
Spain doesn't have a problem of a lack of decrees. It has a problem of a lack of housing.
And as long as the Government keeps confusing announcing measures with solving problems, we'll keep paying the consequences of its inaction.
Subsidizing demand without increasing supply pressures prices. Regulating a market more and more without building new housing doesn't eliminate scarcity: it manages it. Taxing a type of rental can change incentives, but it doesn't lay a single brick either.Because housing doesn't get cheaper by distributing scarcity. It gets cheaper by ending it.
Spain needs to build. A lot.
More available land. Permits in months, not years. More density wherever possible. Legal certainty. Much more public housing and also private housing.
But the Government isn't doing what's necessary. It prefers to intervene on the few homes that exist rather than create the conditions for there to be many more. It prefers to present patches as solutions and load the cost of its failure onto owners, developers, and citizens.
The rest can serve to redistribute, protect certain groups, or change incentives. But let's not confuse that with solving the underlying problem.
You don't fix a lack of housing by better distributing the few homes that exist. You fix it by making many more exist.
Less propaganda. Less patches. Less obsession with intervening on the same apartment.
More supply. More construction. More homes.

Matt @mldickens.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Actually I'm not sure ESA would be included since mass transit covers light rail/monorail/streetcar/subway according to their definitions.

Agree on 2 and 3, but is it actually inflation-adjusted? Dataset says it's seasonally adjusted annual rate data.

Matt @mldickens.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Got it, I misread your first reply. Still, I don't think the rest explains why spending would be 2/3 what it was in 2019. Perhaps it is just weighted more toward megaprojects, or doesn't include something else.

I saw and I think those factors are true but don't really explain the chart, or why this looks so different from data reported by all transit agencies.
100
Matt @mldickens.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
NTD data would say agencies spent more on capital facilities in 2024 than in 2015 or 2020. And more across all subcategories of that. Now, this census survey doesn't measure the same thing, but I don't see why the proportion of e.g. stuff in buildings to buildings themselves would change so much.
100
Matt @mldickens.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
A lot of what you're saying here is true, but I don't think these numbers reflect it. I read the survey and methodology, I think it measures the value of things built *by* state and local agencies, not just state/local funding. I also don't think this accounts for why the number goes up in 2019.
100
Matt @mldickens.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
It's from Census data, but the transit numbers don't really pass the smell test for me. Transit capital spending on facilities has increased from $12 billion in 2015 to $15 in 2020 and $18 in 2024 (APTA/NTD). Not sure what this is excluding exactly. Unclear why it would have gone down starting 2023.
