So where was I? Ah, chocolate chip scones. First: self-raising flour, big pinch of salt, an extra teaspoon of bread soda / baking soda: about 250g lard. pulse the whole business: then add buttermilk ("quant. suff" as we used to say in nursing school) to bring together. Pulse till it does. (1/n)

1/ Happy Juneteenth! How a Texas emancipation commemoration spread across the US is an amazing story. But Juneteenth wasn’t the first Black Freedom Day in America—or the only one of its day. So, let’s talk about em’. Pictured: Martha Yates Jones and Pinkie V Yates, Houston Juneteenth, 1908 | HPL

Currently dying at the fact that the Washington State Department of Health department issued a warning to all visiting the state that our weed is VERY strong & not to be taken lightly. Be safe out there visiting soccer fans! (credit to @pgcornwell.bsky.social for sharing this hilarious nugget first)
A news update that reads:

Health department to visitors: Be careful with strong WA weed
The Washington State Department of Health is warning visitors that Washington's marijuana products may be stronger than they're used to.

Hospitals have seen an increase in emergency visits related to marijuana, according to the health department, as tens of thousands of tourists visit for the World Cup.

In its World Cup visitors guide, the health department says cannabis potency can vary and recommends starting with a low dose and going slow. Edibles can take up to three hours to feel the effects, which can last up to 24 hours.

Let's see what's blooming this week! Canada violet, and I'm posting this one because it has volunteered itself in a patch of dirt right up against the garage, surrounded by boards and rocks. #NativePlants #Bloomscroll #FridayFlowers

I am not done with talking about this situation yet (I'm just working on my wording here), but I want everyone who is watching to internalize this entire thread. NO ONE BLAMES THE AUTHORS. WE ARE NOT MAD AT YOU. The reason so many of us get angry and loud is because we had this happen to us, too.

The thing I love about the author community is that in a Publisher Behaving Badly situation, there's no blaming or hesitation, strangers will come together like a group of friends with a truck, boxes, and snacks for the road as they help move you out of your ex's place to safety in under an hour.

Checking in w/ my native plants, taken at end of May (sorry!). Rosy pussytoes (Antennaria rosea); Locoweed (I thought it was Showy, but from bloom colour, probably actually Mountain Locoweed, Oxytropis monticola); & the two w/ blue flax (Linum lewisii) arcing behind them. #Bloomscroll #FridayFlowers
Rosy pussytoes in the garden. Low growing silvery green leaves have formed a mat. From it, tall green spikes tipped with clusters of rosy pink flowers.Mountain locoweed in a garden. Creamy white pea-like blossoms from a feathery spike of flowers from a base of fern-like, feathery green leaves. Two clumps of rosy pussytoes in the garden, with white mountain locoweed slightly behind them, and sky blue flax gracefully towering over the shorter flowers.

Soniferous Aether xkcd.com/3238/
Comic. [Person and second person with ponytail on stage. Person 1 gestures behind at a display of different wavelengths while Person 2 addresses people off-panel.] PERSON 2: We all know the speed of light is constant for all observers. But our experiments show that the speed of sound *changes* based on the observer's motion. Thus, we posit the existence of the *soniferous aether*, a medium that fills the space between us and carries sound waves. 1 of the neat things about hand-selling @aanpress.bsky.social books is letting the person pick their copy (limited, numbered editions). My batch for Tall Tales of the Holy Terror Tomboy had great numbers, as 1 dad gleefully chose n. 6-7 (to the mortification of his teen) & 1 woman wanted n.69😂
