Today in #museumlife I’m a day away from a bucket list trip & wrestling with something re:grant writing & AI that I can’t outline here. Let me just say: if anyone burns it all down—all the LLMs, data centers, environmental destruction & theft—while I’m gone? I’ll be a lot more likely to come back.

Well that was weird. (I totally understand the science behind the condensation on the court. What I don't understand is why no one who staged this thing had a plan to deal with it. Oh, excuse me, I mean a *plan that had a chance of working in this particular environment*.)

"Volleyball continues to push the boundaries of what's possible..." Emily Ehman says as Wrigley fills w/fans wearing red. Nebraska doesn't play til the 2nd match but we all know which fans are filling those stands. & Nebraska's outdoor match 3 yrs ago is the reason this 1 is happening. #92003

Since moving to Wisconsin I’ve learned of the tradition of having sporty watch parties in the garage/driveway in all kinds of weather, so tonight I’m embracing that and listening to #HuskerVolleyball start their season while I sit out in my driveway and watch the lunar eclipse.

*sigh* yes the election for WI gov will be close & frankly desperate. I’ll vote for you in Nov. But ffs the primary was called 16 HOURS AGO and you’ve already texted me 3X—2X in the last 15 min. All it’s doing is stressing me out & confirming that I was right to vote against you in the primary.

Now I need my nephew to make me some Lego aliens for the exam/autopsy.
A completed Lego set depicting Dana Scully in her lab. There is an autopsy table, a large standing lamp, a microscope for examining some kind of bacteria in a Petrie dish, and a sink with shelving holding bottles, a bowl, and, for some reason, a donut.

Spending Friday night like it’s 1993–building Scully’s lab. And while my Lego expert nephew will laugh at me for sorting pieces by color and shape, I have to. It’s what Dana Scully would do!
A Lego minifig of Dana Scully Hilda a list while she surveys color coded piles of Lego bricks that will become her lab.

I don't want a "Smart Fridge" that orders milk for me. I want a fridge that lasts 25 years and doesn't have a privacy policy that allows it to share my late-night snacking habits with my health insurance provider.

Oh, Lego is releasing an X-Files set? That's okay, I've been out of the fandom for literal decades now, I mean the only thing that would make me spend that kind of money is if Gillian Anders--OH MY GOD I NEED THIS SET.

Wow, our field trip for tomorrow, which was going to be 90 minutes outdoors, cancelled because of the air quality issues. I think it's the right call, but I'm kind of surprised they actually made it. Stay safe out there, everyone.

I finished a thing. Meant as a HS grad gift for my sis, now a fully tenured professor(& 1000% awesome). Stroke of Midnight by Teresa Wentzler, over 2 on 25 ct. (over 1 on the face and dress bands), approx. 15x19". Had to improv in a few places; still in shock that she's really done.
A cross stitch piece depicting Cinderella running down the stairs of the castle after the ball. The prince is in the background. Cinderella has auburn hair and is wearing a purple dress with floral bands at the shoulders, waist, and hemline, along with a pink shawl. The castle windows glow yellow and there are potted plants in the background and foreground. It took me 30 years, off and on, and more than 44K stitches to complete.

AI can tell you how a word is spelled. But the work these kids do to solve those words—developing study tactics, identifying linguistic patterns, honing their ability to perform under pressure—is something a computer can’t do for you. The Bee is a reminder of what the human brain is capable of.

Instead of calling the work of nearly all of children's authors and illustrators (for whom he is the ambassador) "crud," Mac Barnett could be mobilizing the world of children's literature to speak out against the national book-banning bill, HR 7661.

This thread is a good explainer for what’s up in children’s lit right now and also why Barnett’s (the US “ambassador for children’s books”) comment—in a book about writing for children—needs to be addressed seriously, no matter how he meant it.

The crux of it: When you say the overwhelming majority of kids’ books are "crud," you’re not motivating authors to step up and create amazing work. (They've already been doing that, anyway.) You’re just devaluing your medium and the existing body of work.

For those of you who might find yourself in that 97.4% mentioned by Mr. Barnett, I want you to hear this directly from me. Your work is not - oh dear, what was his word? oh yes - "crud". If it is treasured by a child, then that book is a treasure. So too if by a parent and a child. A treasure.

At a cross stitch retreat this weekend I finished Snapdragon (pattern by Nora Corbett). I started her in June 2022 after reading When Women We’re Dragons by @kellybarnhill.bsky.social and in response to SCOTUS striking down Roe v Wade. When’s the next mass dragoning? I’m ready.

I keep forgetting to post my finishes (not that I’ve had a ton lately!), so here are a forest goddess (hair changed to blue b/c niece thought she looked like Hilda) and Gaia. Both patterns by Quaternion Creations.
A cross stitch depicting the Greek goddess Gaia, holding the Earth. An urn with a vine is on her left. A cross stitch depicting a woman with blue hair in a traditional Ukrainian dress. An owl is on her shoulder and her other hand rests on a large grey wolf. A tree on the left arches over her head.
