Carson told the CBC in 2011: “I went to a high school in Port Hope, where the Latin teacher knew Greek and when she found I was interested, she offered to teach me during my lunch hour. So I owe it entirely — my whole career and happiness — to Alice Cowan and Port Hope High School.”

Nobel laureate Anne Carson’s Grade 13 yearbook entry from Port Hope High School quotes Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Angell, Geothe, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Louisa May Alcott and Lewis Carroll.
Photo of a young Anne Carson with text to the left of it that reads: ANNE CARSON The great illusion. A pretty foot is a great gift of nature. Never say more than is necessary. An oyster may be crossed in Love. Now I am beginning to live a little and feel less like a sick oyster at low tide. Oh my fur and whiskers. Zamboanga! Zamboanga!

These hateful losers are so embarrassing, tearing up the good built by millions of others. You can't call the moment when the tide will turn, but their hopes and legacy will fall to nothing in the end, because ruin is all they are capable of.

Threatening the destruction of "a whole civilization" is just explicitly a threat of genocide. Even if it is just a bargaining tactic, even if it is just bluster, it is a threat of genocide. Everyone who has furthered, and continues to further, the aims of this regime is morally culpable.

Why is Trump so enthusiastic about destroying Iranian civilian infrastructure? It won’t win the war. It is likely for another reason: to provoke an Iranian response that Trump can use for his own purposes. (2/17)

Here in Port Hope, Ontario, you need to push a beg button to activate the pedestrian lights, essentially creating the opposite effect. I often end up crossing on a red pedestrian signal because I got there too late to push the button. The worst!

Insightful piece by @stephenmaher.bsky.social. This section is especially eye-opening:
Former RCMP intelligence officer Patrick Lennox, who managed covert collection teams in Alberta during the Freedom Convoy and the blockade at Coutts, has been analyzing the statements of the separatist leaders, and he is alarmed by their apparent co-ordination with the Trump White House.

Jeffrey Rath, a lawyer who speaks for the separatists, said that the most recent meeting in Washington took place in a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility — the kind of room where top-secret meetings take place — with people who report directly to Trump.

Lennox is afraid that even if federalists decisively win an Alberta referendum, Trump will say it was rigged. “We’re going to go liberate the oppressed Albertans who have been badly wronged by the government in Ottawa that is controlled by the Chinese Communists.”

Globe & Mail reporting on Canadian military's modelling of how an extended insurgency against a US invasion would play out: In short, we'd take cues from the mujahideen. "The aim of such tactics would be to impose mass casualties on U.S. occupying forces..."
Military models Canadian response to hypothetical American invasion

By Robert Fife, Gavin JohnCanada does not have the number of military personnel or the sophisticated equipment needed to fend off a conventional American attack, they said. So, the military envisions unconventional warfare in which small groups of irregular military or armed civilians would resort to ambushes, sabotage, drone warfare or hit-and-run tactics.

One of the officials said the model includes tactics used by the Afghan mujahedeen in their hit-and-run attacks on Russian soldiers during the 1979-1989 Soviet-Afghan War. These were the same tactics employed by the Taliban in their 20-year war against the U.S. and allied forces that included Canada. Many of the 158 Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014 were struck by improvised explosive devices or IEDs.

The aim of such tactics would be to impose mass casualties on U.S. occupying forces, the official said.

The aim of such tactics would be to impose mass casualties on U.S. occupying forces, the official said.
Conscription has been ruled out for now, but the level of sacrifice that would be asked of Canadians remains a central topic, the officials said. General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, has already announced her intention to create a 400,000-plus-strong reserve force of volunteers. The officials said they could be armed or asked to provide disruptions if the U.S. becomes an occupying power.

A senior Defence Department official said Canada would have a maximum of three months to prepare for a land and sea invasion. The first indications that invasion orders had been sent would be expected to come from U.S. military warnings that Canada no longer has a shared skies policy with the United States, the source said.

This rupture in the joint defence agreement would likely see France or Britain, nuclear-weapon states, being called on to provide support and defence for Canada against the U.S.

The thing about being a runner in Canada is that there are like two days a year when the weather isn't crappy in some way, so you end up running in increasingly ludicrous conditions without realizing it, like a frog in boiling water.

Rob Reiner was a good guy. He made a lot of movies about good guys, in worlds where not everyone was good and you didn’t have to be good. He made movies about people trying. He was angry, as many hopeful people are. He knew the world could be better and he wanted it to be. His death is devastating.

“You're not alone in wanting a better world, one in which cars are relegated to their proper use. Cars are tools that can be useful at certain times and places. They’re not gods. They’re not the foundation of our society. They should serve us. We should not serve them. There can be life after cars.”
