All human behavior has purpose. Very little human behavior has conscious intent. Most common primary purpose is safety (emotional/physical, etc) but almost all have more than one. Unless we are one of the privileged few with actual mind-reading abilities, we are only guessing about others’ intent.

I cannot know what people who are being abused and abducted experience. But I can imagine that in those moments and afterwords, at least part of what I would need is to know that I was seen. I was seen as a human being who was suffering and others saw my suffering and had compassion.
