This looks very cool!! (I had an initial “but what about the policy recommendation” reaction, luckily their “findings do not necessarily support the nativist argument that immigrants… brought disease… the observed relationship stems more from overburdened living conditions”)

New working paper With Torben Johansen and @ChristianVedel It's on a methodological issue that we think is crucial for the discipline of economic history: Whenever we use machine learning tools in our workflow, they can introduce structural bias. So, what should we do?

Machine Learning is causing massive leaps everywhere. Also in Economic History. There is a conversation we need to have. What ought to be the new scientific standards? Together with two coauthors . Our argument: We should maybe care a bit less about accuracy 📝🧵

Niche PSA: if you are using ggplot2 to make binscatters and using stat="smooth" or stat_smooth to make the regression line, setting ylim and xlim to scale the axes will also censor the data BEFORE estimating the regression coefficients.

We present new annual time-series data on academic human capital across Europe from 1200 to 1793, constructed by aggregating individual-level measures at three geographic scales: cities, present-day countries (as of 2025), and historically informed macro-regions.
