We don’t talk enough about how morally depraved the tech industry turned out to be. Every single ounce of their self-regarding statements of values was an outright lie.

My experience of AI is seeing stories such as this one and crying out, quite literally, "oh no god no," and then sobbing. What are we doing? Why is this not stirring moral outrage? These tools fuel delusions and suicidal ideation and we are just going to...watch it keep happening?

The vulgar dishonesty of Altman and Amodei puts blood on both of their hands, and it’s the duty of every single member of the media to remind people of this whenever you discuss their software. They both love - and monetize! - war. www.wheresyoured.at/the-ai-bubble-is-an-information-war/

Generative AI isn’t intelligent, but it allows people to pretend that it is, especially when the people selling the software — Altman and Amodei — so regularly overstate what it can do.

By giving warmongers and jingoists the cover to “trust” this “authoritative” service — whether or not that’s the case, they can simply point to the specious press — the ethical concern of whether or not an attack was ethical or not is now, whenever any western democracy needs it to be, something that can be handed off to Claude, and justified with the cold, logical framing of “intelligence” and “data.”

None of this would be possible without the consistent repetition of the falsehoods peddled by OpenAI and Anthropic. Without this endless puffery and overstatements about the “power of AI,” we wouldn’t have armed conflicts dictated by what a chatbot can burp up from the files it’s fed. The deaths that follow will be a direct result of those who choose to continue to lie about what an LLM does.

Make no mistake, LLMs are still incapable of unique ideas and are still, outside of coding (which requires massive subsidies to even be kind of useful), questionable in their efficacy and untrustworthy in their outputs. Nothing about the military’s use of Claude makes it more useful or powerful than it was before — they’re probably just loading files into it and asking it long questions about things and going “huh” at the end.

The vulgar dishonesty of Altman and Amodei puts blood on both of their hands, and it’s the duty of every single member of the media to remind people of this whenever you discuss their software.

I get that you probably think I’m being dramatic, but tell me — do you think that the US military would’ve trusted LLMs had they not been marketed as capable of basically anything? Do you think any of this would’ve happened had there been an honest, realistic discussion of what AI can do today, and what it might do tomorrow?

I guess we’ll never know, and the people blown …

The AI economy has become a grifter economy, with dodginess and chicanery at every level, where CEOs lie, and their lies are solidified into plausible-looking analyslop. And the institutions that should be challenging them are nowhere to be seen. www.wheresyoured.at/on-nvidia-an...
So, despite all of this being very obvious, it’s clear that the markets and an alarming number of people in the media simply do not know what they are talking about or are intentionally avoiding thinking about it. The “AI replaces software” story is literally “Anthropic has released a product and now the resulting industry is selling off,” such as when it launched a cybersecurity tool that could check for vulnerabilities (a product that has existed in some form for nearly a decade) causing a sell-off in cybersecurity stocks like Crowdstrike — you know, the one that had a faulty bit of code cause a global cybersecurity incident that lost the Fortune 500 billions, and resulted in Delta Airlines having to cancel over 1,200 flights over a period of several days.

There is no rational basis for anything about this sell-off other than that our financial media and markets do not appear to understand the very basic things about the stuff they invest in. Software may seem complex, but (especially in these cases) it’s really quite simple: investors are conflating “an AI model can spit out code” with “an AI model can create the entire experience of what we know as ‘software,’ or is close enough that we have to start freaking out.”

This is thanks to the intentionally-deceptive marketing pedalled by Anthropic and validated by the media. In a piece from September 2025, Bloomberg reported that Claude Sonnet 4.5 could “code on its own for up to 30 hours straight,” a statement directly from Anthropic repeated by other outlets that added that it did so “on complex, multi-step tasks,” none of which were explained. The Verge, however, added that apparently Anthropic “coded a chat app akin to Slack or Teams,” and no, you can’t see it, or know anything about how much it costs or its functionality. Does it run? Is it useful? Does it work in any way? What does it look like? We have absolutely no proof this happened other than Anthropic saying it, but because the media repeated it it’s n…As I said earlier, the “wow, Claude Code!” articles are mostly from captured boosters and people that do not actually build software being amazed that it can burp up its training data and make an impression of software engineering.

And even if we believe the idea that Spotify’s best engineers are not writing any code, I have to ask: to what end? Is Spotify shipping more software? Is the software better? Are there more features? Are there less bugs? What are the engineers doing with the time they’re saving? A study from last year from METR said that despite thinking they were 24% faster, LLM coding tools made engineers 19% slower.

I also think we need to really think deeply about how, for the second time in a month, the markets and the media have had a miniature shitfit based on blogs that tell lies using fan fiction. As I covered in my annotations of Matt Shumer’s “Something Big Is Happening,” the people that are meant to tell the general public what’s happening in the world appear to be falling for ghost stories that confirm their biases or investment strategies, even if said stories are full of half-truths and outright lies.

I am despairing a little. When I see Matt Shumer on CNN or hear from the head of a PE firm about Citrini Research, I begin to wonder whether everybody got where they were not through any actual work but by making the right noises.

This is the grifter economy, and the people that should be stopping them are asleep at the wheel.

This is an important thing to understand about the behavior that gets described as "AI psychosis"; people are using tools they were told would be helpful or useful, but the companies run by folks with the most experience in the world at manipulating billions of users have designed an addictive app.

One of the things that's most frustrating about the hype cycle around OpenClaw is that so much of what people are excited about is just... software? You can automate doing lots of cool stuff with your inbox with deterministic software that's been around for decades, and it won't delete your inbox!

'Briggs and his Goldman Sachs colleagues recently said that investment spending on AI made “basically zero” difference in U.S. economic growth last year.' You don't say.
Screenshot of the article:

Prominent economists, including from Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase, calculate that the AI buildup was directly responsible not for 92 percent or 39 percent of gains to the U.S. economy in 2025, but as little as zero.
“It was a very intuitive story,” said Joseph Briggs, who jointly leads global economics investment research at Goldman Sachs. “That maybe prevented or limited the need to actually dig deeper into what was happening.”
Briggs and his Goldman Sachs colleagues recently said that investment spending on AI made “basically zero” difference in U.S. economic growth last year.
It’s clear that the huge spending on AI is adding to the U.S. economy, but the available economic data doesn’t neatly capture its effects. The debating economists and the slippery data suggest that if the technology does start to reshape the economy, it may be challenging to detect and clearly measure. That may leave political and corporate leaders to choose the numbers that fit their preferred narratives on how AI is changing American life and work.
The struggle to even measure what is happening today suggests there may be years of bickering ahead over whether AI is creating a golden age of prosperity or a path to mass unemployment and impoverishment.

New awareness campaign
A digital poster in the style of a World War II propaganda piece. Isolaed on a yellow background, a normal, squarish, 20-something guy with glasses is sitting working on a laptop. A ghostly figure of Hitler has his arm around the guy and is grinning and shaking a fist triumphantly looking at the laptop screen. On the lid of the laptop where an apple might otherwise be is an openAI logo, bright green, and dripping green ooze down the lid. Text on the poster, in combinations of sans-serif type and brush script reads:
Using Generative AI?
You’re prompting with Hitler!
GenAI is a Fascist Project!

Meta will use conversations people have with its chatbots to personalise advertising and content across its platforms, in a sign of how tech companies plan to make money from artificial intelligence.

The owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp on Wednesday said it would use the content of chats with its Meta AI to create advertising recommendations across its suite of apps.

“People will already expect that their Meta AI interactions are being used for these personalisation purposes,” said Christy Harris, privacy and data policy manager at Meta.
