Finished my first full week of teaching "Games As Culture." Yesterday, we pushed all the tables to one side and played "GAC-ball," which started as a game similar to bocce but the winner of each round had to add a new rule to the game. The point was actually about playfulness, not rule-making.

Students are often portrayed as antagonists/perpetrators in AI cheating stories, and surely some of them are—I won't entirely dismiss their capacity to make choices. But students are also the main victims. The real villains are not living in dorms or going into debt to learn nothing.

When they said video games were poisoning kids’ minds I think—given the current climate—they were probably referring to Dandy from Beast Breaker. Disgusting!!
A screenshot of the game Beast Breakers. A cute cartoon cockatiel in a suit is talking to a mouse. The cockatiel, Dandy, says “Why, my father is adamant that those of us with privilege must pass it on to those who are less fortunate.”

Soft Rains Day. "Today is August 4, 2026, in the city of Allendale, California. Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills." RIP Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012
There Will Come Soft Rains
By: Ray Bradbury

In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o'clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o 'clock! as if it were afraid that nobody would. The morning house lay empty. The clock ticked on, repeating and repeating its sounds into the emptiness. Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!
In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two
cool glasses of milk.
"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake.
"Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills."

We don't use AI anything because AI makes people feel awful, collectively. If people feel awful then how will they do any good work? In my 20+ years of development experience I have never seen so many people feeling so absolutely worthless and like they have no value at all. Ignoring all of the serious ecological, copyright, de-skilling, and power-concentration issues with AI, I will happily concede that AI can ‘make stuff done faster,’ but that's just an overdrive for what Bad Games Industry decisions have been making forever (work more, crunch more, get paid less, destroy your franchises, ship a sequel every year or die, etc). It's a blunt instrument to do what makes a lot of money for some people, not what makes actually better, sustainable, more enjoyable products for the creators and the players.

Dante's take on Odysseus is that he left Circe, decided not to go home after all, fast-talked his men into sailing out of the Mediterranean into unknown waters...because hey why not? They sail halfway around the world and discover the mountain of Purgatory, only to wreck their ship there and drown.
