The game here is clearly in the first half, but for me it's the "weirdly intense" second half that really makes this one. There's no bluffing, no real strategy, and yet somehow it captures the feel of a high stakes Liars Dice game in a seedy backroom somewhere. Such a cool trick!

I always feel like an outsider in these games difficulty discussions, because I don't finish most games & never have. Growing up playing NES, I never internalized that games are even meant to be finished. I get as far as you can, eventually I stop playing, maybe I come back, maybe I don't.

Forgot to mention that if you play Party House the physical game solo (how most people play the videogame) the shop actually is fairly static! Since the only turnover that happens is what you yourself create.

It's not quite available for purchase yet, but here's a sneak peak at box art for the next Air Land & Sea (including both a classic and a Critters at War version).

The way to have maximum variety in a deck is not to have every card be unique but to have exactly 2 copies of every card. That way every card can also combo with itself.

Why does the physical version of Party House have a dynamic shop instead of a static shop? I've gotten this question occasionally since the Kickstarter launched (I thought I'd get it more tbh). See my answer below.

I think almost everyone understands that "3+" means "3 or more" but how widely is it understood that "3-" means "3 or less"? That latter version seems more likely to confuse non-nerds, but that's just a guess.

Probably should have made this clear earlier -- but if you've been testing the alpha version of Time Barons on BGA, and you find any bugs or weird UI glitches, there's a bug report feature built right into BGA that you can use to report those. Thanks!

Thanks for all the responses, everyone! I've gotten a lot of volunteers already, so I'm going to temporarily stop adding new testers, just so I can save some people for a later testing wave (perhaps after we get the expansion and multiplayer modes added).

One major purpose of TTGDA is to help tabletop game designers negotiate better publishing contracts. We just released the rubric of what we look for -- and info on how different publishers scored on the rubric. Soon we will also release a model contract. More at www.ttgda.org/contract-bas...
Tabletop Game Designers Association (TTGDA) Releases Scoring Rubric and Tabletop
Market Contract Analysis to Promote Equitable Industry Standards

Bridgewater, NJ – The Tabletop Game Designers Association (TTGDA) today announced the
launch of their Contract Scoring Rubric and publication of its Tabletop Market Contract Analysis
– 2026, a comprehensive industry report designed to share information about contract practices
and advocate for fair treatment, intellectual property protection, and designer involvement in the
tabletop game publishing process.
The report, developed by the TTGDA contract & grievance committee—led by industry veterans
Geoff Engelstein, Elizabeth Hargrave, Matt Leacock, and James Lowder—seeks to address the
wide disparity in publishing agreements across the industry. With many first-time game
designers accepting terms that may be disadvantageous, the TTGDA has developed a rigorous,
objective scoring rubric to evaluate publisher contracts.
“Our intention is to shine a light on these industry practices and lead to more equitable
standards,” says TTGDA Vice President Sen-Foong Lim. To assist in this effort, the TTGDA will
be releasing model contracts that adhere to the criteria established in the scoring rubric.
The full report can be downloaded at www.ttgda.org/contract-basics.
Key Industry Findings
The analysis of contracts from over 50 publishers reveals several critical areas where many
standard publishing agreements fall short of fair practices:
● Advances: Only two-thirds of publishers offer a baseline advance above the
TTGDA-recommended minimum of $1,000, while 20% offer no advance at all.
● Designer Involvement in Expansions: 40% of publishers retain the right to create
expansions without consulting the original game’s designer.Intellectual Property Rights: 75% of publishers retain the rights to a game’s name after
the publication agreement concludes and rights to the design revert to the creator.
● Financial Transparency: One-third of publishers deny designers the right to audit their
books, and 10% include non-standard deductions to revenue before royalties are
calculated.
Moving Toward Standards
The Tabletop Market Contract Analysis includes aggregate results, with summary scores for
each individual publisher available to TTGDA members. However TTGDA would like to highlight
the top five scoring publishers (alphabetically): 25th Century Games, Fireside Games, Lunar
Punk, Plaid Hat Games, and UP Games.
“These results are not a call to avoid specific publishers,” says TTGDA President Geoff
Engelstein. “Rather they are a tool for designers to negotiate terms that include fair payment,
intellectual property protection, and a meaningful role in the final product.”
The organization plans to release semi-annual updates to the Tabletop Market Contract
Analysis as more contracts are reviewed and publishers revise their standard agreements.

Perhaps the biggest difference between video game and board game design is that a successful video game designer will work on a single project for 7 years, while a successful board game designer will have 7 games published in a single year.

I just played one of my favorite games of Dominion ever. The dreaded Possession was in the kingdom and my opponent went right for it. But Margrave was also present, so I was able to make my hand intentionally worse before handing it over. The best was giving them a hand of 2 curses + Ghost Town...

For a while I've been noodling on a taxonomy of decision types. I'm not convinced it's fully baked, but I already have been using it successfully in my design process, so I thought I might share it here in its current form. At the moment there's 5 types.

It happens to me often, where I write a song & realize it doesn't sit quite right in my vocal range. So then I transpose it so it feels better to perform, but I can never get used to hearing the new key on playback. It just forever sounds wrong to me. And so I never finish the song. 😑

I've posted about it before, but Jinxo (Dito in German) is one of my favorite new party games, so I'm very happy to see it get nominated for a Spiel des Jahres. True, it's yet another party game about matching the majority, but both its writing & bingo-like structure really elevates that formula.
