Remembering Lauren Bacall on her birthday with stills from her failed but fascinating film THE FAN (1981). It had potential as a poignant psychological thriller, but ultimately leans too heavily on slasher-style shocks. Still worth watching for Betty, its opening titles, and the memorabilia. #BOTD

It may feel like we’re living through the peak of media backlash, but in 1945, critics went ballistic against Lauren Bacall after the bombing of CONFIDENTIAL AGENT. Barely a year after her huge breakthrough in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (1944), the scrutiny and the misogyny was quite unforgiving.

In honor of the 80th anniversary of its release, here’s a video I made last year on why there are two versions of THE BIG SLEEP (1946) and how CONFIDENTIAL AGENT (1945) almost ruined Lauren Bacall’s career right after her meteoric rise to fame. Watch here: youtu.be/BfiuhiOO4GM?...

For Charles Boyer’s birthday, here’s a shoutout to the criminally underrated HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (1937), a film I covered in a video last year. Frank Borzage’s direction with Boyer and Jean Arthur as the lead couple can only mean romance at a level few films ever reach. One of my favorites.

Today's inspiration is author Edna Ferber visiting Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor on the set of Giant (1956).
Actors Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor and author Edna Ferber — both actors in costume, Hudson dressed in a light-coloured suit and dark tie, Taylor in a black gown, Ferber in a light-coloured dress with bow bust detail, wearing a string of pearls — captured together, Ferber facing the camera, flanked by Hudson and Taylor in profile as Ferber looks up at Hudson and smiles, mid-conversation, in a medium-length black-and-white shot taken during a break from filming on the set of Giant (1956)

#filmnoir #moviesky #filmsky My favorite Barbara Stanwyck #botd noir role, Helen Stilwin in JEOPARDY (1953). She’s cool and shrewd as she partners with smooth-talking, sexy fugitive Ralph Meeker (Lawson).
A still from the film noir, JEOPARDY. The view is of the front seat of a moving convertible car from outside the drivers side.
Barbara Stanwyck is smoking a cigarette and looking at the driver who is actor Ralph Meeker who has a cigarette in his mouth.
She has a cool-as-a-cucumber look as she draws on her cigarette.

Sam Neill was his generation’s James Mason: he never give a dud performance and was utterly convincing as a goodie or a baddie. He could do warmth or chill and you never saw him “act”. I loved him as the dishy, callous Astrov character in Michael Blakemore’s Uncle Vanya adaptation Country Life. RIP.

I am a long-time film fan of Jean Arthur's, and to date . . . I still remain in awe of her with every film I watch/rewatch her in. She remained consistently flawless (imo) throughout her career, and I don't just mean her beauty, but in creating believable characters, from beginning to end.

The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.
And our governments are very much the same.
