Remembering Lauren Bacall on her birthday with stills from her failed but fascinating film THE FAN (1981). It had potential as a poignant psychological thriller, but ultimately leans too heavily on slasher-style shocks. Still worth watching for Betty, its opening titles, and the memorabilia. #BOTD

After her marriage in 1945 with Bogart, Photoplay published a piece written supposedly by him in which he points out the difference in media treatment between Betty and Charles Boyer. Admittedly, she was an upcoming performer, but still. The complete article is available through @internetarchive.

It may feel like we’re living through the peak of media backlash, but in 1945, critics went ballistic against Lauren Bacall after the bombing of CONFIDENTIAL AGENT. Barely a year after her huge breakthrough in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (1944), the scrutiny and the misogyny was quite unforgiving.

In honor of the 80th anniversary of its release, here’s a video I made last year on why there are two versions of THE BIG SLEEP (1946) and how CONFIDENTIAL AGENT (1945) almost ruined Lauren Bacall’s career right after her meteoric rise to fame. Watch here: youtu.be/BfiuhiOO4GM?...

Me encantó Manolo Solo en Una quinta portuguesa (2025), la primera vez que lo veía como protagonista. Si a alguien se le pasó en su momento, la recomiendo de corazón. Especialmente a los que, como a mí, os atrapa todo lo noir.

Never quite sure how to feel about my birthday, so I kept it low key this year after some intense months. But I still wanted to celebrate over here with this bit about fellow Gemini Rosalind Russell. Her wit, energy, and comedic brilliance will always inspire me. 📽️ Clip via Doctor Macro.

Kicking off June and Marilyn Monroe’s centenary by dusting off one of my most treasured possessions, TASCHEN’s collector’s edition of SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959). A gift from my mum for my 18th birthday, and still one of my most sentimental pieces for an all-time favorite film. Happy 100th, Sugar.

Beyond a remarkable filmography, James Mason is associated with the rediscovery story of Buster Keaton film prints in his former Beverly Hills home and the lovely publication "The Cats in Our Lives" which he co-wrote and illustrated along with his wife Pamela. Such a lovely legacy. #BOTD

Today our recently adopted senior cat Negri had to undergo major dental surgery to hopefully improve her quality of life. She’s now under observation and it’s been a tough day. Tough weeks, actually. Recovery might take time, but we’re wishing for the best possible outcome for her. 🖤

“One must learn to forgive the times one lives in.” That's a line from FORTUNE IS A WOMAN (1957) that I kept returning to while writing my review of Indicator’s Columbia Noir: Made in Britain Blu-ray set, which I reviewed in January for The Arts Desk. Read here: www.theartsdesk.com/film/blu-ray...
A frame of the British noir Fortune Is a Woman (1957) in which an old lady surrounded by a group of people says "One must learn to forgive the times one lives in." Quite a lapidary line that feels relevant nowadays.

Here’s a clip from a Barry Norman featurette with Kate Winslet who, thirty years ago, was nominated for her role as Marianne Dashwood in the wonderful Jane Austen adaptation SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (1995). She lost the Oscar to Mira Sorvino but you can already see that she was destined to go places.

Not entirely satisfied with my latest #LetterboxdWrapped. Technically, my most-watched actor and director were all ties: Jane Fonda and James Stewart; Ernst Lubitsch, William Wyler and Frank Borzage for most watched director. Honestly, a Fonda–Borzage card would’ve been more accurate this year.

It’s that time of year when I gently remind people that FALLING IN LOVE (1984) makes a great holiday film. It starts and ends at Christmas, Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro are quietly wonderful in it, and their first meeting happens in the Rizzoli Bookstore. Plus, a beautiful Dave Grusin soundtrack.

James Stewart explained in this 1973 Michael Parkinson's interview why IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) meant so much to him, and it all came down to moments, particularly the iconic prayer scene. Do you agree with his theory? Are movies truly made of performances… or moments? Or both? #Filmsky

New first-time watch that became quite a discovery for me: NIGHT MUST FALL (1937). An adaptation from the play by Emlyn Williams, starring Rosalind Russell, Robert Montgomery and Dame May Whitty. The last two received Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

Sometimes I think about how great Gene Tierney would’ve been on Columbo. Her film WHIRLPOOL (1950) with Richard Conte and José Ferrer has such strong Columbo energy that it feels like a lost episode. Ferrer eventually made it onto the show, but Gene would’ve been unforgettable. #Norivember #FilmSky

My favorite #Noirvember discovery so far it's been the Spanish noir EL SALARIO DEL CRIMEN (The Salary of Crime, 1964) directed by Julio Buchs. Fatality, police corruption, a heist, a doomed protagonist... The best ingredients in an intriguing exciting film. Una cinta estupenda. #filmsky

Another favorite of Diane Keaton’s more recent films is MORNING GLORY (2010). She’s not in it as much as I’d like her to be, but it gave us a wonderful old-style banter with Harrison Ford. Love it.

The primary source of my love for Diane Keaton comes from BABY BOOM (1987). As the daughter of a single mum, its final scene always gets me. She starred in more iconic films, but her J.C. Wiatt will always be my favorite. For her incredible work and presence, I'm so grateful, and heartbroken today.
