I am grateful to @mattseybold.bsky.social for writing an extraordinary and comprehensive essay that places Alpha School at the heart of a much larger question: whether the social compact that both provides and protects public schooling will endure. The battle has been joined. It's time to fight.

Technology being everywhere doesn’t mean it belongs everywhere. The tech industry wants us to believe that AI in early education is not only inevitable, but necessary. We don't see it that way. This week, we announced a moratorium on generative AI for public school students in 2-K to 8th grade.
We’re eliminating AI use for students in 2-K through 8th grade for the upcoming school year.

Courtesy of @ddmeyer.bsky.social, we now know that students at Alpha School’s public charter school in AZ are scoring at 10% proficiency in math. That’s not only 50 points below what they promised, it’s well below the state average. These schools are a joke.

Problem Patterns in AI: Beyond Hallucinations
The article discusses the rise of "AI slop", characterised by generic, uninspired content produced by AI, often resulting in stylistic and substantive issues, rather than just factual inaccuracies. It categorises these problems into seven types, highlighting the reputational risks associated with careless AI use and the need for nuanced discussions about AI-generated outputs.

AI;DR: When readers stop trusting writers
In February this year, a safety researcher named Mrinank Sharma resigned from Anthropic with a long, public letter. Resignation letters from AI labs are a genre of their own now, and this one was widely shared and picked over. More evidence, from a large-scale study in China, that using AI hurts learning if it undermines mental effort. When homework time drops due to AI use, so do test scores. Across studies, there is a clear theme: AI tutoring in support of classes is good, using AI to "help" with homework is bad.

one of the most comprehensive surveys on children’s use of AI--conducted March 18-26, 2026, among 9-17yr olds in the US (N = 1,204)--has been released www.commonsensemedia.org/sites/defaul... highlighting key findings 🧵 "Nearly 9 in 10 kids age 9 to 17 (86%) use/interact with AI"
Nearly 9 in 10 kids age 9 to 17 (86%) use or interact
with AI, including about one in four (24%) who do so
on a daily basis.
Teens use AI more often, but use is widespread even among younger
adolescents, with 81% of 9- to 12-year-olds, 89% of 13- to 15-year-olds, and
92% of 16- to 17-year-olds saying they use or interact with AI. Nearly 3 in 10
teens (29% of 13- to 17-year-olds) and 17% of 9- to 12-year-olds use AI daily.
AI-generated summaries in search engine results are the most widely used
form of AI among 9- to 17-year-olds, with 75% having used or interacted with
them. Just over two-thirds (67%) have used AI chatbots, including 58% of 9- to
12-year-olds, 71% of 13- to 15-year-olds, and 77% of 16- to 17-year-olds.
However, when kids are asked which AI they use most often, ChatGPT is by far
the most frequently mentioned (by 40% of all 9- to 17-year-olds), followed by
Google’s AI offerings, including Gemini, AI summaries, or other Google AI
tools (24%).

At the University of Central Florida's College of Arts and Humanities graduation on May 8th, real estate exec Caulfield told the graduating class that "the rise of artificial intelligence is the next industrial revolution." One student yelled, "AI sucks", and the crowd erupted. Caulfield turned to the other speakers onstage, visibly confused: "OK, I struck a chord.
