City of Boston question: I stepped in wet asphalt while walking today and probably ruined my shoes. There were no warning signs posted by the asphalt patches/ramps and this was a municipal construction project. Is it worth paying $15 to file a claim for the shoes, or would I be throwing money away?

This reminds me of one time from the 90s when my family and I were hiking and we happened upon a rescue party and the crew was trying to explain to the guy (who had a twisted ankle) that they could easily do an assisted walk-out, and he kept shouting, "NO! I NEED A CHOPPER! GET ME A CHOPPER!"

on the one hand, fuck them on the other hand the supreme court explicitly signing off on Ballroom is actually a pretty good weapon to use when it's time to argue for court expansion, and does far less damage than most of their rulings

One of the aspects of the rescue billing policy that I find troubling is the notion that negligent hikers put rescue volunteers in harm's way. It's always bad when a volunteer gets injured on a rescue, but participating in one isn't some kind of obligation triggered by any emergency. It is a choice.

Miles Howard @milesperhoward.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
True, and that's why I decided to dig into the revenues raised by recent card sales and compare it to the SAR costs from the same years. In NH, the card sale proceeds have begun exceeding rescue costs, and yet, the rescue billing still happens semi-regularly.
